Do you know how to keep yourself and your loved ones safe while waiting for a tow truck? Here are a few safety tips from a tow truck operator.

At one point in our lives, many of us have to rely on the services of a tow truck company.

Whether you are going to work, taking your children to school or taking a leisurely day trip up the coast, having a mechanical issue with your car can throw a wrench in your plans.

Do you have a flat tire? Is something wrong with your engine? Have you been in some kind of accident?

Whatever the reason for your car troubles, you have to stay calm and alert to keep everyone safe while waiting for roadside assistance to arrive.

Even though your vehicle is experiencing issues, there are many other vehicles that will be passing by and could potentially be unaware of your troubles, and they can pose a threat.

Do you know how to keep yourself and your loved ones safe while waiting for a tow truck? Here are a few safety tips from a tow truck operator.

Travel Safety Tip #1: Park Your Car In A Safe Place

Depending on the area you are in when you have car trouble, it may be impossible for you to find a safe place to park.

For instance, if your car is badly damaged due to a collision or in the middle of a busy highway with engine trouble, you may not have the opportunity to move it.

It is always best to move your vehicle as far off the road so traffic flow is disrupted as little as possible.

This is especially true if you are expats and not familiar with the area.

In the event your vehicle cannot be moved, turn on your hazard lights and/or use flares and cones. Most cars are not sold with them, so be sure to assemble your roadside emergency kit and place it in the car.

Travel Safety Tip #2: Remain Inside Your Car On Busy Roads

Breakdowns can happen at any time – your engine will not ask you what time is best for you for an auto mishap.

If you and your loved ones are stuck on a busy stretch of road, the best thing to do would be to make sure everyone remains inside the vehicle. Getting out means that you are taking a chance on being hit by a passing car.

If you have the power to turn on your hazard lights, make sure to do this. You should only leave your vehicle to place flares and cones, but if and only if it is perfectly safe to do so.Do you know how to keep yourself and your loved ones safe while waiting for a tow truck? Travel Safety Tip #3: Ask The Towing Company For Identifying Info

When calling a company to come and help with your vehicle, always ask for the name and license plate of the person they are sending to help you. Once help arrives, you can check the information to ensure it matches what you were already told.

Reputable tow truck companies will gladly show you their credentials. It is important for drivers to be aware of the signs of a tow truck scam. Knowing this will safeguard you and your loved ones from criminals that may be trying to victimize you.

If you have any doubts, do not leave your car until you have seen an ID. You should call the police if the person who arrives is acting odd or they refuse to offer you any proof of who they are.

Travel Safety Tip #4: Entertain Your Family

Keeping your family amused and entertained while waiting for help will make the time fly and stop everyone from focusing on your predicament.

If you’re on a road trip, you should already have books, games and other amusements in your vehicle. If you’re just out running errands, you might want to pack some inexpensive card games in your glovebox.

There are also travel versions of your favorite board games available to keep in your backseat. The classic game I Spy is a simple and quick solution for boredom, especially if you are stranded in an area that is pretty scenic. This will help keep things fun until someone arrives to assist you.

Growing up we broke down on the way back of two different family trips. It was not a fun experience – my brother and I were cranky and just wanted to go home. At that time there wasn’t all of the electronics available as there is today (i.e. tablets). I do think it is important to have a plan in mind for just in case. Great tips, thanks for sharing!

I like your tip to stay in the car if you’ve broken down. That way you won’t be able to get hit by passing cars. Also, if you’re waiting for a tow truck, it’s a good idea to get your car as far away from traffic and to turn your flashers on.

When sharing the road with large trucks, be aware of their blind spots. If you can’t see the truck driver in his or her mirrors, then the truck driver can’t see you. Thanks for sharing!
