What is a side hustle?

The deliberate act of utilizing hours outside of your primary job to turn an idea for a product or service into an alternate income stream.

I work full-time at an advertising agency. I’ve also had this blog since 2011 – it’s my side hustle.

Who needs a side hustle?

I think everyone does! The economy is never stable enough to think that your employer is always going to look out for you. After being laid off several years ago, I vowed to never depend solely on just one stream of income.

When should you work your side hustle?

Nick from Side Hustle Nation says “Your 9-5 May Make You a Living, But Your 5-9 Makes You Alive!”

So, that means work your side hustle in the evenings, on weekends, during your lunch break, and any other pockets of time you have.

Also, check out my Day in the Life of a Working Mom series where 31 working moms shared what they do for work, their family life, and…. tips/tricks for getting everything done.

These working moms also shared how they fit a side hustle into their life.

Where do you work on your side hustle?

I don’t have a dedicated office space at home. Rather, I work from my dining room table, couch, bed, patio, or anywhere I need to be to get things done.

If you have a dedicated space, that’s great. (Wish I had one.)

But don’t let not having a physical location deter you. I’ve worked from the break room at work, my desk during lunch, my car, a park bench, in the airport, or even by the pool.

If you bring your phone, computer, and any supplies you need, you may be able to get creative enough to get your work done anywhere.

Why do you need a side hustle?

Your WHY is what will keep you going when the world seems to be battling against you. It is what will push you forward when you had a tiring day with your day job.

It is what makes missing all the weekend celebrations worth it.

How do you find a side hustle?

The Side Hustle Journal is your start-up partner that will help guide you from concept to cash flow. Build your business while working at theirs.

It’s a physical journal aimed to help someone with a day job (whether that be going into an office or staying home with the kids) turn an idea into reality.

Execution, focus, and structure are the key aspects of the journal and aim to help someone create a fulfilled and prosperous life through starting their own side hustle.

I had the opportunity to review the Side Hustle Journal before the campaign was launched. No compensation was received for sharing this post.

The Side Hustle Journal (25 pages) includes:

  • What’s your why?
  • How to determine what YOUR successful idea will be
  • Tips on evaluating your idea(s)
  • Access to a Facebook community
  • Opportunity to be paired with an accountability partner
  • Advice on setting your ultimate goal
  • How to set milestones
  • Weekly plan
  • Daily plan (splitting your day up into routines)
  • Space to make notes and draw scribbles
  • Weekly review
  • Additional resources to help on your side hustle journey

The Side Hustle Journal takes your mountain and turns it into several molehills, which sets you up for success.
