There are several stunning islands to explore in Hawaii. And each has its set of attractions, from pristine beaches and massive volcanic mountains to national parks and thrilling water adventures.

But what makes Maui the best island to visit in Hawaii for first time is that it is replete with unique attractions that suit all types of tourists. Families with kids, groups of friends, couples, and even elderly tourists have an incredible time during their vacation to Maui.

Unsurprisingly, it is among the most frequently visited Hawaiian islands.

So, here’s a list of some fantastic things you can enjoy in Maui on your first visit.

Wailea

Wailea is not just one of the best attractions in Maui; it is also the place most tourists prefer to stay on their visit. Scores of spectacular resorts and five gorgeous beaches make it a popular choice for water adventures.

Also, there are excellent golf courses such as Wailea Blue, Wailea Emerald, and Wailea Gold, where avid golf enthusiasts can tee off in peace.

The entertainment complex, along with Wailea’s shopping and dining scene, is another bonus to enjoy. If you visit in February, you can catch the Whale Week festivities and the Maui Film Festival.

Haleakala National Park

Maui’s geology is fascinating to study. Did you know that Maui was created by two volcanoes that were formed on the ocean floor? With time, these mountains rose above the sea and connected, making the island of Maui.

A trip to the Haleakala National Park will tell you a lot more about Maui’s breathtaking scenery. The park is situated on the slope of the gigantic albeit inactive Haleakala volcano – the largest dormant volcano in the world. It is over ten thousand feet high and spread across an area of approximately 25,000 acres.

You can look into the Haleakala crater, enjoy the sunrise from a popular spot, and also visit the freshwater pools in the valley of ‘Ohe’o. The valley is also home to the Waimoku and Makahika waterfalls. If you reach early, you can enjoy a quick swim before the place gets crowded.

Snorkeling and scuba diving

Unbeatable water adventure opportunities are one of the things that make Maui the best island to visit in Hawaii for the first time. There are several marine habitats and beautiful reefs right off the coast of Maui. You will find many rental shops that provide snorkeling and scuba diving equipment. Also, many of them offer lessons to first-timers.

The Honolua Bay is a popular water adventure sport, isolated by imposing cliffs and home to quiet waters and various marine life. Although, note that there are no lifeguards at this spot, so exercise caution. Molokini is another great snorkeling spot.

Iao Valley State Monument

Located west of Wailuku, the gorgeous Iao valley is a paradise for nature lovers. Traditionally a pilgrimage place, it holds immense historical and cultural significance. Right in the middle of the valley is the intimidating Iao Needle, a monolith volcano standing over two thousand two hundred feet high. Also, it is said that the valley is home to manas, the ghosts of Hawaiian gods.

While several well-crafted pathways lead to the Iao valley, one must be careful as the area is prone to floods and other natural calamities.
