How Can Modern Technology Help A Child’s Development?

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure.

by RAKI WRIGHT

In the last decade, the pace of development in modern technology has been extremely rapid. Every year, computer processing power becomes more sophisticated, and microchips become smaller and more powerful. This ongoing trend of development allows newer and more powerful forms of technology to emerge that can satisfy a wide range of both consumer and business needs. However, this article focuses on modern technology in terms of the positive impact it can have on a child’s development.

Many parents will be concerned about the amount of time their children spend online and on social media sites. This is one aspect of modern technology that has both positive and negative impacts on a child’s development, and excessive screen time should be replaced with more practical activities that stimulate learning.

In this article, some key examples will be provided to illustrate how modern technology can help a child’s development.

Apps to support neurodivergent children

In the last decade, there has been a growth in the number of applications that can be used to support the growth and development of neurodivergent children. To the uninitiated, neurodivergence is a term that describes children and adults who interpret and interact with the world differently.

It is important to remember that there is no such thing as “normal” when it comes to how people perceive and interact with their environment. However, neurodivergent children may experience certain challenges when it comes to daily life, communication, and learning suitable behavioral traits.

Autism is a common form of neurodivergence, with recent evidence indicating that rates of autism have tripled in some parts of America between 2000 and 2016. Thankfully, apps such as Autism360.com can help support the growth and development of children with this condition.

Such apps can be used to create goals and milestones for autistic children that will help them learn effectively. In addition, these types of apps typically feature access to a wealth of online resources and information that can help parents create an ideal environment for learning and play.

They may also include access to counseling services and the ability to connect with other parents who have neurodivergent children, sharing knowledge and tips on how to create the ideal learning environment for their children.

Computer games that aid learning

Whilst many computer games have received negative publicity in the mainstream media in recent years (most notably, the Grand Theft Auto series of games and ultra-gory horror titles), it is important to recognize that computer games can play a valuable role in learning. Firstly, playing computer games can improve the development of hand-to-eye coordination and certain spatial awareness traits.

In addition, many games seek to educate younger gamers and teach them new skills. One of the most widely-known games that offer educational benefits for children is Minecraft.

Put simply, this can be compared to a digital version of Lego, where players build complex structures by gathering resources and constructing buildings in three dimensions. Subsequently, a new version of Minecraft has been launched (Minecraft: Education Edition) that aims to teach children about science, math, history, and the arts as they enjoy building virtual environments.

Parents should search online to find a wide range of educational games for their children. Ideally, take the time to read customer reviews of the games to ensure that they are fit for your child’s age group and level of development.
