7 Tips for Parents Raising Kids in the Era of Technology

Technology and devices can be touchy subjects. Technology moves fast, and as a busy parent, it can be hard to keep up. These seven tips for parents raising kids in the era of technology will help you catch up and give you some relief.7 Tips for Parents Raising Kids in the Era of Technology

Wi-Fi Settings

Many internet services come with an app to download. In these applications, you will find parental controls. Skip the middleman and monitor and block websites right from the Wi-Fi service.

You can even see devices connected to your Wi-Fi and pause them directly from the app. Check your internet service’s website for more information on their parental controls.

Cell Phone Settings

Many cell phones allow you to limit screen time; you can even set time limits for specific apps. What’s nice about this is the settings don’t change until you say otherwise, and you can adjust as your child grows older.

Many parents are hesitant to buy phones for their children and put the internet at their fingertips. However, a smartwatch can make parenting easier by providing communication without a Wi-Fi connection. This will allow your kids to stay in contact without making the full internet available.

TV Streaming Settings

Today, TV streaming services are more prevalent than cable TV. This is more helpful to parents, believe it or not, because many of these services already have built-in controls.

You can tailor a profile for each of your children. This will allow them access to only kid-friendly content.

Block Websites

As a parent, you might want to get familiar with the different kinds of websites your child visits. If you happen to see one that isn’t appropriate, block it through your internet provider or on your child’s device.

Parental Apps

Many app developers have made more services for parents. These apps can track social media, filter content, track location, and update you with alerts. Some of these apps include Bark, Norton, and Qustodio.

Be a Role Model

Your child mimics a lot of your habits. Set a good example for them by educating them on the use of technology. By keeping an open line of communication, your child will feel comfortable coming to you about any situation.

Designated Tech Space

This last tip for parents raising kids in the era of technology will make screen time easier for the whole family. Designating a space to leave all your devices ensures you know where they are and can check them at any time.

Another great idea in conjunction with this tip is designating an area to use the devices. Being in the room while your kids are on the internet will allow you to listen in or check what they’re looking at right next to you.

Finally, don’t forget to keep your parenting style in mind. Not everyone parents their kids the same; choose the best way that fits your family. Feel free to add or subtract any of these tips to fit into your screen time rules.
