Filling your home with sunlight will make it appear bigger and more welcoming from the moment you step through the door. But your interior design is not the only thing that will benefit from the influx of natural light, it’ll have a positive effect on your health as well. It’s been proven that the sun can have a big influence on your mood and mental health. And then there’s also the added bonus of lower energy bills because you’ll limit the need for artificial lighting. With so many reasons for maximizing daylight in your home, there’s only one question left to answer: How can you do it?

Make sure your windows are clean

It may seem quite obvious, but the truth is that the easiest and the most cost-effective way to make sure your rooms will get as much natural light as possible is cleaning them regularly. Even the most beautiful traditional sash windows won’t look good if they are covered in dust. It’s especially important when you live close to the road because your windows will get dirty pretty quickly. It’s best to complete this task at least once or twice a year, to make sure nothing is stopping the sunlight from getting inside. Even if you can’t really see the residue on the surface, once you clean it properly, you’ll be able to notice the difference right away.

Don’t cover the windows

Thick curtains in bold colors look great, but they aren’t the best choice in interiors where getting a sufficient amount of light is an issue. If you really feel the need to cover the windows, for example, because you’re worried about maintaining your privacy, choose lighter fabrics that will be transparent enough to let the light in. But if possible, it may be a good idea to just leave your windows uncovered throughout the day to get the most out of daylight. It’ll not only allow the sun to get into your house without any problems, but it’ll also go along with the latest design trends.

Remember about your garden

Whether sunlight will be able to get into your house doesn’t depend solely on what’s inside, but on the things outside of it as well. While you won’t be able to do much about other buildings, if it’s your own garden that’s creating the problem, solving it is in your hands. If you want to plant trees or bushes, it may be better to keep them a little bit further away from the property. But if you decide to place them close to the windows, you have to remember about trimming them regularly so they won’t become problematic later on.

Use bright colors and mirrors

If you want your rooms to be bright, nothing will help you as much as painting the walls white. It’s the best color to reflect light throughout the space to get the most out of it. And don’t even think about choosing a darker shade for your ceiling, it’ll make the whole space appear gloomy. To make the end result look even better, add a few mirrors and shiny objects. Big wall mirrors will not only help the light get to every corner of the room, but they will create an illusion of a bigger space as well.

Convert your loft

If you have an attic you use only to store things, you may want to look into the possibility of converting it into a loft. It’s a bigger investment, but you can gain an additional room or two this way. And by installing the right windows, you’ll be able to create a sun-filled space that will turn into your favorite part of the house. Among the options available on the market, like Optilight roof windows, you’ll easily find the ones that will meet your requirements.

If you want to completely transform your house, the light will be your biggest friend. You’ll be able to highlight certain elements of the interior design and create a unique atmosphere. So take a walk around your rooms and look for elements you can improve to maximize the daylight.
