The Benefits And Risks Associated With Massage Therapy

by RAKI WRIGHT

Massage therapy is no longer something that is only done in luxury spas or health clubs for relaxation purposes. Nowadays, massage therapy is provided in clinics, businesses, hospitals and sometimes airports.

In this post, we will be telling you more about the benefits and risks associated with massage therapy.

What Does A Massage Involve?

Massage is the term for rubbing, manipulating, and pressing your skin, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Massage can range from light strokes to deep tissue pressure.

It can be performed manually or with the help of massagers. You can also choose between a variety of machines, from foot massagers to neck massagers and everything in between.

There are many different massage techniques and various forms of massage, including these more common ones:

Swedish Massage – This type of massage is a gentle massage with long strokes, deep circular movements, kneading, tapping and vibration to help the patient relax and to re-energize them.

Deep Massage – the massage treatment utilizes slower and more vigorous strokes to target the deeper layers of connective tissue and muscle. It is commonly performed to assist with muscle damage as a result of an injury.

Sports Massage – Sports massage is alike Swedish massage; however, it is aimed toward those doing sports activities to help with the prevention or treatment of injuries.

Trigger Point Massage – This type of massage emphasizes on areas that have tight muscle fibers that form in the muscles after overuse or injury.

Advantages Associated With Massage Therapy

Whether you are opting for a professional massage or using a CardioTech massage chair at home, massage treatment is linked with integrative and complementary medicine. It has been offered increasingly alongside standard therapy for various medical situations and conditions. Studies performed to determine the benefits of massage therapy demonstrate that it is indeed effective therapy for lowering pain, stress, and muscle tension. While more research must be conducted to validate the benefits linked to massage treatment, certain studies have indicated that massage might be helpful for:

  • Digestive disorders
  • Temporoman dibular joint pain
  • Anxiety
  • Sports injuries
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Soft tissue injuries or strains
  • Insomnia due to stress
  • Headaches
  • Myofascial pain syndrome

Try a myofascial massage wherein professional therapists find tight areas of connective tissue and work to restore them to their optimum state. This causes the tissue to relax and then increase the stretch.

Besides the advantages for particular diseases or conditions, many individuals merely enjoy massage because it generates feelings of comfort, caring and connection. Despite the various benefits of massage therapy, this form of treatment should never be used as a substitute for frequent medical care. Always consult with your doctor before undergoing massage therapy and be sure to stick to the standard treatment plans that you already have in place.

What Are The Risks Of Massage?

The majority of individuals can benefit from getting a massage. However, this therapy might not be suitable if you have:

  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Bleeding disorders or are taking any blood-thinning medication
  • Severe thrombocytopenia
  • Fractures
  • Healing wounds or burns
  • Deep vein thrombosis

First discuss the benefits and disadvantages of massage treatment with your physician, particularly if you are pregnant or you have unexplained pain or cancer. Some varieties of massage can lead to soreness the following day. However, massage must not ordinarily be uncomfortable or painful. If you are experiencing discomfort or pain during any part of the massage, you must let the therapist know immediately. Most severe issues happen due to too much pressure applied during a massage.
