How to Save Money on Reading

Reading is on my kids’ list of fun things for summer. I share eight free ways your kids can enjoy reading this summer.

Reading is a way to experience culture, adventure, and excitement.  My kids love going to the library to check out books & DVDS, participate in library programs, and use the computers.

Fun Things for Summer don’t have to be expensive.
I find that you can do most any activity inexpensively,
if you are flexible on the when and the where.

Library

Libraries offer traditional books, ebooks, Kindle books, books on tape/CD, and more.  Your kids can also participate in your library’s summer reading program.  Prizes often include free activity coupons to local bowling alleys or for free kid’s meals at local restaurant.

Summer Reading Programs

In addition to the library, there are many national Summer Reading Programs available in most states.  Check out each site for details on the required number of books, dates available, and prizes awarded.  Here are a few that I know of:

Kindle Books

(Affiliate link) Amazon offers many free Kindle books.  We’ve downloaded children’s books as well as books about keeping house, self-help, religion, and more.

Thrift Stores

Stores in my area sell children’s books anywhere from $0.10 to $0.50.  These stores are a treasure trove of children’s books, old classics, and new best-sellers.

Book Swap

Get together with family, friends, classmates, and church friends.  Everyone brings their unwanted books.  Depending on the quantity, you can work out how many books each child gets to take home.  Sorting books by age or grade level would probably make the most sense.

Book Store

Most bookstores have clearance bins or sections where you can find deeply discounted books that didn’t sell as fast as was hoped for.

 Amazon Prime

Members of the (Affiliate link)  Amazon Prime program can borrow books from the Kindle lending library.  “The Lending Library features over 180,000 titles, including many New York Times bestsellers. Books borrowed from the Lending Library have no due date and can be delivered to other Kindle devices registered to your Amazon account.”

Audiobooks

Sites like Audiobooks.com, Audible.com, and your local library offer audiobooks for download.  Some are available via a cloud and others will be downloaded to your listening device.
