5 Easy Ways to Encourage Kids to Love All Kinds of Music

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure.

by RAKI WRIGHT

Do you wish you could connect with your kids through music? Today, I’m sharing five super easy tips to help you cross musical generations. (plus a Netflix giveaway!)

beat-bugs

Family movie night. Car-ride duets. Weekend dance fests. The best moments happen when the family comes together — and much of that happens over music and entertainment. It’s why 40% of families say they routinely watch all sorts of shows together. It’s also why you grow nostalgic for the music your parents loved and eventually want to pass it down to your kids as well.

I love experiencing music with my kids. They listen to the oldies with me (Rick Astley, Journey, Earth, Wind, & Fire, The Sugarhill Gang, and Kool & The Gang). I listen to new music with them (Twenty One Pilots, Major Lazer, Desiigner, and Drake).

Here are five easy ways YOU can connect with YOUR kids through music:

Listen

Listen to what? Music you love and new music. There are digital platforms, CD’s, and even records you can be introduced to. Attend live concerts with your kids. There is nothing like hearing music live!

Sing

Sing both popular music and old music. I listen to the radio with my kids, we stream music, and we listen to and sing oldies in the car. My daughter loves for us to do this at home in the living room on the surround sound. I know that if you are a parent you have sung silly songs and rhyming songs before. Tell me I’m not the only one! I listen to and learn their songs, too. What better way to take interest in your kids than indulge them in their interests, too?

Dance

Have a “Friday night dance contest,” as my six-year-old daughter calls it. We listen to some of the top songs that are out on the radio now via YouTube on our living room TV and act crazy. I also encourage them to dance the way they feel. Sometimes songs will have a dance associated with them (i.e. Watch Me Whip, Nae Nae, or Apache), but sometimes I leave it up to them to interpret how the music makes them feel and show me through dance. You can’t treat them like they’re a circus act and just watch them dance. YOU have to dance, too!

Make & Record

I played piano in elementary, middle, and high school. Encourage your kids to learn to play an instrument (piano, drums, percussion, string instruments, etc.). Support their musical tastes, endeavors, and performances. Record your own karaoke sessions, too. YouTube makes this really easy to do on your computer or smart TV and you can record it on your cellphone. You’ll probably remember that with toddlers, you can make your own instruments from household items like wooden spoons, pots, pans, and wind chimes.

Watch

With the new Netflix original series Beat Bugs, inspired by the music of the Beatles, your next family sing-along can be “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” Thanks to five charming and energetic bug-like creatures (Jay, Kumi, Crick, Buzz and Walter), families have the opportunity to come together over kid-friendly storylines and the best damn music ever made.

The show features brand new versions of some of the popular songs sung by these stars:

P!nk {pop rock singer} – Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds – Ep1

James Corden {late TV show host}  – I’m A Loser – Ep2

Aloe Blacc {American soul artist}  – Rain – Ep3

Robbie Williams {pop rock / dance pop singer} – Good Day Sunshine – Ep4

Eddie Veder {rock musician from Pearl Jam} – Magical Mystery Tour – Ep6

Frances {English Pop/indie pop/folk/soul singer-songwriter} – In My Life – Ep10

The Shins {indie rock band} – The Word – Ep11

The Lumineers {folk rock band} – Honey Pie – Ep12

Sia {electropop songwriter and singer}– Blackbird – Ep13

Wow, this hit close to home. My ex-spouse of 6 years came out to me as transgender the day we came home from a vacation. I did my best to be supportive, but it wasn’t a life I wanted and I asked for a divorce. We’d already been on rocky terms and our marriage had deteriorated over the years. The whole thing threw me for a loop – it was hard to go through and come out of, but I did. My experience was similar to this author’s; looking back I noticed some signs, but I wasn’t aware of them until after the fact.love

I have to admit that I visited every link that you mentioned, and it was hard for me to choose a favorite one. But if I did, it would probably be the one about the micro cottages for the homeless. I love the idea for several reasons – the two main ones being that I was homeless and that they are very cute. Seriously, have you ever googled micro house plans? Practically every house plan site has a set of them. 😀Pedal Harp

Collaborative projects like this are always welcome in the community. I love how our entire community has grown. I am part of the people who started this entire thing, and I am really proud of what we were able to do. I hope that we can continue to improve this craft and this community that we have built. There is nothing that I want more than to see this community grow to the best possible version of itself, that is my dream.
