As our largest organ, the skin bears the brunt of our existence. Stress, weather, hormones– you name it, our skin wears it.

The summer can be challenging for skin care, and there’s nothing quite as relaxing or confidence-boosting as having healthy, happy skin to face the world. Here are five things you can do to show your skin some TLC this summer.

1. Protect Yourself Against the Sun

While there are plenty of great creams to help with anti-aging, being proactive in staying safe from the sun’s harsh rays will have lasting effects. For a mom, proper sun protection often gets overlooked in favor of ensuring the kids are covered. Invest in a fabulous hat that will provide some shade (and style) for the summer. Pick something you love enough that you won’t forget it at home when heading to the beach.

Sunscreen is also a powerful sun protection tool. Ensure you’re adequately covered and look for brands that are free of chemicals and preservatives. Investing in face-only sunblock is helpful for those who have oily skin.

2. Nail Your Skincare Routine

In the summer, you have a little more time to get things done in the morning. Now is the time to perfect your skincare routine. Wash your face with a cleanser every morning and evening. Apply toner and a moisturizer that suits your skin type.

It’s important to set aside time to properly wash your face every day when you get up and before you go to bed as you’ll likely be sweating more in the summer sun.

3. Embrace Your Natural Self

Believe that you are beautiful and embrace your natural self. For fair skinned people, forgo the urge to start tanning, which can lead to wrinkles, sun spots and– most importantly– cancer.

Rather than covering up in makeup, let your skin breathe and opt for a fresh-faced, nude look. When wearing makeup, keep it simple and highlight your natural features with light gloss, translucent powder, and the bare minimum on the eyes. If nothing else, it will prevent the challenges of keeping makeup on in the heat.

4. Hydrate and Nourish

As you’ll be sweating more, you should be drinking more water. Water keeps your body happy and healthy and flushes toxins from your system. More water equals bright, beautiful skin.

Taking care of your skin starts from the inside. Take advantage of farmers markets and produce by adding more nutritious food to your repertoire. Salads can be nutritious and delicious and don’t require turning on the oven to prepare. Fresh fruit makes a quick, easy snack for the whole family.

5. Remove Chemicals

Make it a summer goal to switch to more natural products. While you may not think of shampoo and conditioner as a skincare product, the residue that comes from rinsing can have an effect on your skin. Start getting familiar with red flag items and read ingredient lists on your hygiene and beauty products.

Creating your own blends of shampoo, soaps, and lotions is a fun summer project that the whole family can partake in. Things like apple cider vinegar, argan oil, coconut oil, honey, and green tea– all items you can find at the supermarket– are perfect for making chemical-free beauty products. Make some extra and gift them to your friends to help them show their skin some love this summer as well.

You Deserve This

Taking care of your skin doesn’t have to be a full-time job. It can be a way to relax and unwind and show yourself some appreciation for the hard work you do all day. Take a proactive approach to skin care, and you’ll reap the rewards for years to come.
