Vitamins and Proteins That Support Skin Health

Your skin is one of the first things that people will notice about you. Before you think about choosing something to wear that feels good on and looks great, you need to think about what you’re doing for your skin.

Your skin needs several important vitamins and nutrients to stay healthy. When you give your skin what it needs to stay strong and hydrated, you’ll notice a change that you can see and feel. Here a few key components of good skin health.

Collagen

Collagen is a type of protein that serves as an important building block for your skin, hair, bones, muscles, and ligaments. Your body produces it naturally, and it helps your skin stay strong and supple. However, collagen production naturally diminishes as you age. In addition, the collagen composition of your skin breaks down after prolonged exposure to the sun. Collagen supplements and topical products that contain collagen and other vitamins – also found in BHMD Dermal Repair Complex – can help to counteract the natural processes in which you lose collagen.

Vitamin C

Eating foods that are rich in vitamin C is an effective way to support your skin’s collagen composition. Vitamin C lends strength to collagen so it’s harder to break down. Topical serums and creams that contain vitamin C may also help your skin’s appearance by making it look firmer and even-toned.

Vitamin D

Your skin has to regenerate continuously in order to stay healthy and look smooth and fresh. Vitamin D is an important part of the regenerative process. Also, it helps your immune system to terminate free radicals that can dehydrate and damage skin cells. Much of the vitamin D that people take in every day is from sunlight, but too much sunlight can negatively impact your skin. Taking a multivitamin that contains vitamin D or taking a vitamin D3 supplement will help you to ensure that you’re getting the right amount of vitamin D.

Vitamin E

Taking a vitamin E supplement will give a boost to your collagen production. In addition to improving your skin’s texture, it can also improve the texture of your hair and nails. Topical creams and oils that contain vitamin E can give your skin a tighter-looking appearance as well as a softer feel.

Retinol

Used in a topical treatment such as a serum or oil, retinol is fantastic for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Furthermore, retinol is excellent for repairing uneven skin tone and minimizing blotchiness or discolorations. It can treat acne without the unwanted over-drying or irritating side effects of other acne treatments. At the same time, it can help to fade red marks left from acne and speed up the healing process to reduce acne scarring. Some retinol products are sold in relatively low concentrations such as .15% but you can buy serums that have a concentration of around 2.5% and present relatively low risk of irritation. As always, whenever you’re trying a new product, you should test it out on a small part of your skin before applying it to a large area.
