Visiting Cyprus: How To Make The Most Out Of Your Trip

by RAKI WRIGHT

When planning a vacation, it’s essential to make the most of your time. That goes for any destination, but especially for a place like Cyprus. This Mediterranean island is full of culture and history, and there’s plenty to see and do. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your trip to Cyprus.

Rent a Car

Public transportation is available, but it can be slow and unreliable. Having your wheels will allow you to go where and when you want. Just be sure to drive carefully – the roads can be a bit treacherous in places.

In Cyprus, there are three major companies to choose from: Avis, Hertz, and Europcar. All of them have their pros and different ways of operation, so it’s a good idea to do some research before you make a decision.

Once you’ve chosen a company, book your car in advance.

Understand the Weather

The Mediterranean climate means Cyprus has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. That said, the island is small enough that the weather can vary depending on where you are.

For example, the north is usually a few degrees cooler than the south.

There are detailed blogs with reliable information regarding the weather of this great tourist destination. Take time to look at the weather information by city.

Generally speaking, the best time to visit Cyprus is spring or fall. The Cyprus weather is more moderate, and the crowds are smaller.

If you come in the summer, be prepared for heat – temperatures often exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pack Light

No matter what time of year you visit, you must carry enough luggage. The truth is that Cyprus is a casual place.

You don’t need to dress up for dinner; even the most popular tourist destinations are relatively relaxed.

Still, it would be best if you packed a few things: sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes. You’ll also want to bring a bathing suit if you plan on spending any time at the beach.

Beach or Mountain?

There’s no shortage of things to do in Cyprus, but most visitors find themselves drawn to the beach or the mountains. The beach is probably your best bet if you’re looking for a relaxing vacation.

With nearly 200 miles of coastline, there’s plenty of sand.

If you’re adventurous, you’ll want to head for the mountains. The Troodos range covers about a third of the island, and there are plenty of hiking and biking trails to explore.

You can also visit some of the traditional villages nestled in the foothills.

Book for Accommodation in Advance

Finding a place to reside early is a good idea whether you’re looking for a hotel, a villa, or an apartment. Cyprus is a popular tourist destination, and places fill up quickly – especially in the summer.

If you’re having trouble finding a place to stay, try using an online booking service like Airbnb or VRBO. You can often find some fantastic deals on these websites.

Sample the Local Cuisine

Cypriot food is a delicious mix of Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern influences. Fresh seafood is plentiful, and you’ll find that lamb is used in many traditional dishes.

Some of the must-try dishes include Souvlaki (grilled meat skewers), Kofta (minced meatballs), and Moussaka (a baked eggplant dish). And, of course, you can’t come to Cyprus without trying the local wine.

Explore the Ruins

Cyprus is an island with a long and rich history. As such, there are plenty of ancient ruins to explore. The city of Paphos, once the island’s capital, is the most popular destination.

Here, you can visit the remains of a Roman villa and the Tomb of the Kings – a site that dates back to the 4th century BC.

If you’re looking for something a little less touristy, head to Kiti’s village. Here, you’ll find the ruins of an Early Christian basilica nearly 1,500 years old.

Visit a Nature Reserve

With its mix of mountains and coastline, Cyprus is home to a variety of different ecosystems. As such, it’s no surprise that the island is home to several nature reserves.

The Akamas Peninsula is one of the most popular nature reserves. It’s home to various plant and animal species and some stunning beaches.

Another great option is the Krousia Mountain Range, where you can find some of the island’s rarest plants.
