4 Tips for Restoring Your Family’s Dated Home

by RAKI WRIGHT

Owning a home is the biggest investment that the average family will make. Especially if the home is older, you may need to restore and renovate areas of the house that need it.

Among these problems that could arise in an older home that you just made the decision to purchase could be mold, fire, and water damage that affects the safety and appeal of living there.

Fixing these things are necessary for the time that you will be in the home, but they are also necessary for if you ever decide you want to sell my house fast.

When you live in an older house, it can feel like the renovations that you make to allow your house to be safe and aesthetically pleasing are neverending. Here are four tips for restoring your family’s home.

  1. Know When to Bring in the Experts

There are some issues that are too big for even the mom who watches HGTV all day. As many episodes of Fixer Upper that you have seen are not going to help out like Water Damage Companies companies can with issues like mold, fire damage, and water damage.

In these cases, it is always best to hire a licensed team, like All Dry USA property restoration, to restore your home. Because with issues like water damage, that will often turn into mold, you should always make sure that an expert is taking care of all of the damage in your house and not just the parts that you have seen so far.

  1. Take a Look at Your Windows

In many older homes, there are also older windows. If you find that your windows are not sealed properly, this might be a good place to start when you are renovating.

By either replacing the windows entirely or properly sealing the old ones, you could save money on your utility bills, and with kids, you are going to need to find ways to save money.

  1. New Paint

Depending on how old your home is, you might need to deal with old and unfashionable wallpaper.

One of the simplest ways to modernize a house is by taking down the flowery wallpaper and adding a fresh coat of paint. You would be surprised by how quickly a room can transform simply from a paint job.

  1. Decide What You Want from Your Floors

Much like patterned wallpaper, a lot of the carpet and flooring styles that come with a home built in the 60s will be very dated by now.

If you want to update your interiors, your next step is to get rid of the shag carpets and linoleum tiles and replace them with something a little more modern looking.

As another fun tip, many of the wooden floors that are trendy nowadays are hidden underneath the flooring covering it, so be careful when you are lifting the tiles and carpets because you could save some serious money by simply refurbishing the wood floorboards lying beneath.

The Bottom Line

Simply by doing these four things, you will be surprised in the change that you will see in your home. After an inspection for any mold and water damage, a look at your windows, a fresh coat of paint, and a change in flooring, your property will look modern and clean without having to splash tons of cash.

If you are tired of looking at dated walls and floors, not to mention paying an arm and a leg for utilities every month because of old windows letting the cold in, it may be time to take these simple steps in making the home that you live in modern—and most importantly, yours.
