Divorce is without question the hardest step any woman will ever face in her lifetime. Many women will ask “what can I do to prepare myself for a divorce?”

While some women will turn to their friends and family for advice, many will spend thousands of dollars on books or counseling before they make any decisions at all. Let’s examine some easy steps that any woman can take to prepare herself for a divorce.

What a Woman Should Do

At  lawfirmofvictoria.com, we recommend that you examine what a woman should do before even thinking about a divorce. If you are a woman who has never been divorced, you are likely wondering why someone would want to divide up a marriage like this. Divorce is an irreversible thing and you don’t want to put yourself through that. Here are some thoughts you should keep in mind.

Child Custody and Visitation

You should know what is going to happen to your children and who is going to be the custodial parent. If you have already been married for at least two years, your spouse probably doesn’t want or needs to change the custody arrangement any time soon. Your job is to be prepared for the worst and that includes your children. Be sure to do your research and become educated on all of the specifics of child custody laws in your state and discuss these with your attorney.

Bankruptcy and Asset Protection

Once you have discussed the division of assets and debts with your attorney, you will need to consider whether you will be able to file for bankruptcy as soon as the divorce is finalized. Some women file for a chapter seven bankruptcy protection right away and others wait.

Health Insurance

We hear horror stories about women who allowed their husbands to take control of their health insurance policies and were left holding the bag for high premiums and high deductibles. It is best to be prepared and protect your financial future. Health insurance is one area where many of the details can be decided by the judge at the final hearing so it is best to be informed so you don’t end up paying more than you should.

Child Custody and Visitation

Both parents should make a choice about the schedule and location of the custody and visitation. There are several factors considered by the court and they include the age and health of the children, the behavior of the children, the ability and willingness of each parent to provide for the physical needs of the child.

Many seek the assistance of a family lawyer in Utah to get professional help in these trying times.

It can get really confusing and wise women will hire an experienced family lawyer to help her with this process.

Post Divorce Leases

After the divorce is finalized, some women wonder if they should also get post-divorce contracts. It is best to discuss this with your lawyer because each state has their own guidelines regarding this and it would be a good idea to get all of the information you need.

Divorce is an Emotional Time

Divorce is an emotionally charged time in a woman’s life. In order to make sure that you do not end up emotionally distancing yourself from your husband, it is wise to be as prepared as possible. While there will be many things that come up when talking about your divorce, it would be helpful if you are well informed about divorce and the legal areas that concern you.
