Reasons To Make Your Own Cleaning Products

by Emma Radebaugh

If you’re a working mother, convenience is key. As such, you may be tempted to purchase the first cleaning product you see on the shelf and call it a day. However, despite being less convenient, there are several advantages of taking the extra time to make your own cleaners.

In addition to improving the health of your home’s inhabitants, setting aside time to DIY your cleaners can save you money and reduce your negative environmental impact. To learn more about some of the main reasons to make your own cleaning products, continue reading.

Homemade Cleaning Products Are Healthier

Many of the cleaning products you can find at the store are riddled with harsh chemicals that can negatively affect the health of your home’s residents. Store-bought cleaning products often release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. These common indoor airborne pollutants can cause numerous negative effects—from mild eye, nose, and throat irritation to potential brain or liver damage. By making your own cleaning products, you can ensure they don’t contain such harmful ingredients.

They Reduce Negative Environmental Impact

In addition to harming the health of those who live in your home, the VOCs present in many store-bought cleaning products can also do a number on the environment. When VOCs are released into the air, they negatively affect air quality both indoors and outside. In fact, they greatly increase the formation of ozone and fine particulates in the atmosphere, which results in harmful smog. To decrease the presence of VOCs in the atmosphere, consider making your own cleaning products using more natural ingredients.

They’re Less Expensive

Aside from improving your health and reducing your negative environmental impact, making your own cleaning products offers the added benefit of saving you money. You can make many DIY cleaners with only a few products, many of which you can probably find in your kitchen cupboard, such as distilled white vinegar, soap, baking soda, and essential oils.

As such, making your own DIY cleaner will typically be less expensive than purchasing a store-bought option—especially if you’re looking for a nontoxic product with more natural ingredients. In many cases, DIY cleaners will cost under $1 to make, while store-bought cleansers can cost anywhere between $5 and $15 a bottle.

They Offer More Customization Options

Customization is yet another reason to make your own cleaning products. When you make your own cleaning products, you get to customize them to suit your specific preferences. Whether you want to control the strength, smell, or ingredients, you have total control. The same freedom isn’t awarded to people who opt for premade products from the store.

Starting today, you should consider making your own cleaning products because they are healthier, reduce negative environmental impact, save money, and you can customize them. What do you think?
