Moving is a tall order for anybody. All the packing, paperwork, and effort that goes into it can be exhausting.

Some people try to do it all themselves, but we know a lot of others just don’t have the time. That’s why there are thousands of moving companies all across the country. These companies specialize in helping you get your stuff from point A to point B quickly and all in one piece. However, the problem isn’t a lack of options — in fact, it’s just the opposite.

As it is with any contractor, finding the best people in your area is always a challenge. There are likely dozens, if not hundreds, of moving companies to choose from. With that many choices, it can feel like no matter what option you choose, there may have been someone better.

There are some things you can take into consideration, though, when trying to choose a contractor. Here are our best practices for how to find the best moving companies near you.

Get A Referral for Moving Companies

Firstly, you can just ask around. Check-in with people that you know. See if there are any companies around you that they have already worked with. If so, it at least helps narrow down your search – a lot. If someone you know and trust had a good experience with a given company, that’s super helpful. Honestly, there’s really not a better recommendation you can find.

Alternatively, maybe your friend had a terrible experience with a company. More than 7,000 Americans are scammed each year by fake moving companies. In addition, thousands more have had terrible experiences. Checking with people you know can act as a bit of a safety net, protecting you from having that same negative experience. But what if you don’t know anyone who used a moving company recently?

Check Online Reviews for Moving Companies

If you can’t find a personal referral, you can always try looking online. It usually isn’t hard to find online reviews for the contractor you’re considering working with. If one of the moving companies you’re looking for has tons of great reviews, that’s awesome. Similarly, if they have really negative reviews, then at least you know to steer clear of them.

There are lots of places to find reviews. A quick google search will yield some results. Unfortunately, though, it won’t tell you everything. Sometimes you’ll need to do a lot of digging to get the information you’re looking for. But even if you know the company has a good reputation, how do you know they’re worth what they charge?

Get Lots of Quotes from Moving Companies

This is key. You need to know what different companies in your area are charging. If you only talk with one or two companies, how can you know you’re getting a good deal? And, depending on where you are in the country, prices can vary wildly. A “cheap” price in one city could be radically expensive somewhere else.

If you have the time, you can try calling up all the companies in your area. See what they charge and how their rates are set up. In case you don’t know this, companies charge by the weight and size of what they’re moving, so don’t pay anything upfront. Moving companies should always be surveying what you have and charging based on that.

For a lot of us, the time it would take to do all of that research defeats the purpose of hiring a moving company in the first place. Thankfully, there’s a much easier way of getting this done.

Discover Moving Companies at GetYourQuote.com

GetYourQuote.com is built by homeowners for homeowners. They know how difficult it can be to find the right contractor for any given job. So, they’ve made that process simple, fast, and easy.

All you have to do is let them know what you need to have moved, where you’re moving to, and what your timeline is. The site is an exhaustive database of movers (and other contractors, too) across some of the biggest cities in the country.

Additionally, every contractor registered with GetYourQuote.com has already been vetted by their team. There’s no need to worry about scams or the company doing a shoddy job.

And the best part — they’ll get you that quote completely for free. Why spend all the hours researching the best moving companies near you when they’ve already done the hard work? Moreover, it doesn’t cost you anything extra to use the site!
