DNA tests are often used to determine the identity of a specific child’s biological parent(s). It is a relatively simple process that involves the collection, examination, and analysis of genetic samples, samples that come in the form of blood and buccal cells (cells lining the inside of the cheek that are collected with cotton swabs).

The popularity of paternity testing has grown over the years thanks to advancements in technology. Where before DNA paternity testing was given some secret, scientific vibe, it has now become a part of the lives of most American moms.

Testing centers have as a result popped up at almost every corner in America. Much to your convenience, a simple ”paternity testing near me” online search, will direct you to the closest center. See more.

Why Moms Across America Are Using DNA Tests

From first-time moms to the ones who’ve been through it already, all are testing. A prenatal paternity test by AlphaBiolabs provides the most accurate way to determine paternity before birth.

It uses a state-of-the-art process which combines the latest DNA technology and unique methods of preserving the baby’s DNA, which is naturally found in the mother’s bloodstream after 7 weeks into the pregnancy.

They all have different reasons, but here is a look at the more common ones.

More Accurate Test Results

DNA tests have proven to be the most accurate form of identification there is. So much so, that it is taken as absolute truth in a court of law. Paternity testing involves a process where 15 genetic markers of the father must match the markers from the child in order to prove he is the biological father.

The best DNA tests are ones that are reliably accurate. There is no room for uncertainty when it comes to paternity.

The Biological Father is Unavailable

In some cases, the biological father of the child is simply not available for testing. He may be deceased or traveled to another country, or simply unwilling to present himself for a DNA test.

The mother’s DNA can be used to establish a biological relationship with the child. Non-invasive prenatal paternity tests are used by mothers that aren’t sure who the father of their child is. In this case, a sample of cell-free fetal DNA that is found in the maternal blood is analyzed.

For Relationship Tests

In relationship tests (used to ascertain if two or more people are biologically related) the DNA of the biological mother is vital. These tests ascertain if people are siblings, twins, or extended family members.

Postnatal and Prenatal Testing

Postnatal tests are risk-free for both the mother and child, as all that is required is a saliva sample from the newborn baby. Results are available within a few days and the procedure itself is fairly straightforward. The main benefits of postnatal tests are their ease and a low risk to the mother and child. They are also much cheaper.

Prenatal tests are conducted in order to find anomalies in the development of a child while still in the womb. It is a bit uncomfortable because the method of collecting samples -called chorionic villus sampling. It involves collecting cells directly from the mother’s placenta, using a catheter that is inserted into the vagina using a needle.

DNA Testing Is More Than Proof of Identity

Test results have been used mainly in divorce and custody cases to prove that the man is the biological father of the child, and therefore is legally obligated to provide for his child/children. But DNA testing is more than that.

More mums are taking DNA tests not just to prove their child’s identity, but also to prevent genetic disorders. Knowing the health of the unborn baby can help make informed decisions that will have a significant impact on the future of the child.
