Every year, we learn once again that summer doesn’t last forever. When you first feel a chill in the air, keep yourself and your family safe with these wellness pointers. A few tips for staying healthy during fall and winter will ensure that you fight off germs while staying cozy.

Tips for Staying Healthy During Fall and Winter

Wash Your Hands

Since childhood, we’ve been taught to wash our hands before a meal or after getting dirty, but the importance of handwashing skyrockets during cold and flu season. Wash your hands every time you come home from an errand or outing. To make those 30 seconds fun, sing a verse or two of your favorite song!

Get Those Vitamins In

As the days grow shorter, you obviously won’t see as much of the sun. Make sure you still get your recommended daily dose of vitamin D, whether through supplements or foods like dairy. Vitamin gummies are popular with kids, but next time you buy them some at the store, pick up a bottle for yourself, too.

Keep Up With Doctor’s Appointments

If you’re feeling a little stuffed up, try relieving the pressure with aromatherapy—but all the at-home remedies in the world are no substitute for the proper medical treatment. If you experience sniffles, congestion, or sinus discomfort that lasts longer than two weeks, check it out with a doctor; sinus disease is no joke. Keep your airways clear this fall and winter by getting regular medical care.

Limit Large Gatherings

The less frequently you mingle with large crowds of people, the lower your chances of bringing germs home. You don’t have to be housebound all season, but when you do venture out into populated areas, carry hand sanitizer and a mask with you just in case. Ensure that your home is a safe place for your family by limiting the germs you bring in.

Visit With Friends

Whether it’s in small gatherings or through a video chat, make sure to stay in contact with your friends and family. When the days get shorter and darker, you may feel like hibernating—but don’t give in to that temptation!

Stave off loneliness and seasonal depression by reaching out to loved ones. Make sure your kids stay engaged with their friends during winter break.

As we welcome the chilly season this year, keep your family safe by following these tips for staying healthy during fall and winter. Enjoy time with your loved ones without worrying about germs!
