How to Prepare Your Kids for Kindergarten

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure.

by RAKI WRIGHT

Nowadays modern children should come to primary school and even kindergarten “fully armed.”

They are expected to know the alphabet and counting rules, and have basic reading skills. That is why the earlier your preschooler starts preparing the better, even if there is a year or two left before school begins. Here is a list that might be useful for the parents and their kids to plunge into.

Letters and Numbers

Entering school for each child is a kind of demonstration of their basic knowledge in letters and numbers. Kids should be able to perform their skills in recognizing the full alphabet in print and reading them aloud and elementary counting up to 20.

Phonemic Hearing

The development of phonemic hearing is necessary for the successful teaching of children’s reading and writing. Small kids often confuse phonemes that are close in sound, which in some cases inhibits the development of coherent speech. That is why kids should be able to identify words that rhyme, particularly when pictures are shown to them.

Put Letters into Simple Words

When coming to school young learners are expected to recognize not only letters but also simple words and their names. When preparing for school, practice your child’s skills with reading flashcards and worksheets. Kids Academy website is an amazing free source of online apps to develop and expand young readers’ first steps.

Arts and Crafts

Fine motor skills influence kids’ development greatly in general, namely the development of speech and writing, and therefore absolutely necessary for basic homework. Cutting paper patterns with scissors, pasting different objects to make posters, coloring, and drawing, working on arts and crafts is the best way to improve the basic motor skills of your child.

Early Geometry Shapes and Symbols

Squares, circles, triangles, rectangles are basic shapes that your kid should be able to recognize and draw when entering kindergarten or school. It will be helpful for the young learners to develop their early geometry skills later.

Also, be sure that your preschooler has an idea of what a symbol is. Start with simple symbols like country flags or popular brand logos.

Daily Routine Regulations and Autonomy Learning

It is very important for young learners to adapt to new and changing routines. They should clearly understand that there are certain rules of conduct in the school that need to be followed. Teach your kid how to put away jackets, or store backpacks. Young kids should be able to follow instructions from teachers as well as to learn independently.

In order to meet the requirements of modern education, parents need to pay more and more attention to the preparation of their preschoolers and they need to start from kindergarten and elementary school. However, not everything is as scary as it might seem at first glance. If your child needs more practice, feel free to use Educational Apps for Kids best websites for kids learning. Math, Reading, Writing, World around us, Social studies, History, English, Art and Crafts, Chess, and Science worksheets are available online to help your child with skills that he or she may be struggling with.
