Tips for Creating a Toy Rotation System for Your Kids

by Emma Radebaugh

It’s common for moms to find themselves dealing with mountains of toys that their children leave around the house. That’s where creating a toy rotation system for your kids can be quite helpful. Read on to learn several tips for implementing one.

A mother sits with her son in a living room as they play with a toy dump truck. Other toys sit next to them.

Start with a Big Sort

You should start this process by gathering all the toys in one central location. This allows you to see everything you are working with.

Create separate piles for toys to keep, donate, and discard. Be ruthless with broken items or toys your child has outgrown. This initial declutter is the most challenging step, but it sets you up for success.

Group Toys by Category

Once you have your “keep” pile, organize the toys into logical groups. You can categorize them by type, such as building blocks, puzzles, art supplies, and dolls.

It is worth noting that almost every plaything can enter a toy rotation, even a kids’ ride-on motorcycle. After organizing them, you can create balanced selections for each rotation.

Store the Toys Carefully

Now, it’s time to store the toys you’ve sorted. Make sure you keep the toys that are “out” of rotation somewhere your child cannot easily access them, like a closet or the garage. Keeping them out of sight makes the “new” toys feel exciting when they reappear.

Create a Simple Schedule

Another tip for creating a toy rotation system is to decide on a schedule that works for you. You might choose to swap toys weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly.

There is no right or wrong answer, so pick a timeline that feels manageable with your busy schedule. Mark it on your calendar to help you stay on track and build a consistent routine.

Involve Your Child

Make the process a team effort by involving your child. Explain that you are creating a special system to make their toys feel new again.

Let them help you sort and choose which toys will be in the next rotation. This gives them a sense of ownership and gets them excited for the change.

Creating this system is an investment in a more organized home and more engaged playtime for your child. You are building a framework for less clutter and more creativity. Stay consistent, and you will see the wonderful benefits that this system can bring to your family.
