The 3 Essentials To Know About The Mediterranean Diet

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure.

by RAKI WRIGHT

With diet fads that come and go there is one that has stood the test of time. It’s the Mediterranean Diet and it isn’t a diet at all.

It is a way of eating that results in healthy people who have a much higher than average lifespan than people eating other diets. The reason it shouldn’t be called a diet is that it isn’t a system that can be monetized. It’s simply a lifestyle centered around certain foods.

It is how people around the Mediterranean basin eat and it is a great way to make sure that you are eating a balanced diet without many restrictions. In this article, we will go over what you should know about the Mediterranean diet.

1 – Keep it fresh

One of the keys to eating like a Mediterranean person is to eat fresh and whole foods. They eat with the seasons so they will cook with foods that are at their peak of nutrition and taste. In other words, they don’t attempt to eat tomatoes in the middle of winter since they are not local and fresh.

Instead of focusing on recipes that don’t account for the seasons, try to shop at local farmer’s markets and find a local natural food market and cook that they have. If there are no tomatoes in season, then try a recipe with broccoli instead.

When you start eating with the seasons then your diet starts to make more sense and you are eating much healthier.

2 – Limit your meat consumption

These days we have as much access to meat and any type of food that we want without restrictions. In the old days meat was a luxury and usually only eaten occasionally. This means that they filled their bellies up with vegetables, grains, and legumes on a daily basis.

Limiting your meat consumption makes your diet more varied and unbalanced since you ne to eat other types of foods to get your daily caloric limit. Instead of eating a piece of steak, fill up on some beans. Pass on the chicken and eat some barley salad. These legumes and grains are very filling and give you a lot of energy as well as fiber.

If you think you’ll miss the taste of meat, then cook your meals with some meat stocks or even some cured bits of pork like pancetta. This way you are not adding much meat protein to your diet but will get all the flavor from it.

3 – It’s a diet of abundance

With the exception of limiting your meat consumption, the Mediterranean diet is not restrictive. There is no food that is on the list of restrictions unlike other diets. You can eat as much as you want when you are eating a balanced diet.

The recipes are delicious so you will want to fill up on vegetables and grains and not feel like you are missing out on anything. Savor that cheese, enjoy that bread, and feel satisfied instead of yearning for more food.
