If you are feeling like it’s time to change up your space and bring a light, airy, aesthetic into your home consider adding floral curtains. A soft, feminine, floral curtain can add a lightness to your living space and help you achieve that cottage core aesthetic you’ve been swooning over on social media.
Something as simple as changing your curtains can make your basic apartment feel so much more like a home.
Why Cottage Core
Cottage core has been blowing up lately for a reason. It brings us back to simpler times. Times when we spent more time doing the simple things like: gardening, baking bread, doing embroidery, and reading a cook in a cozy corner. It has a fairy tale feeling to it. There is something magic and romantic about dreaming of living in a cozy cottage, deep in the woods, off the beaten path, surrounded by flowers. It’s similar to the shabby chic aesthetic that was popular a few years ago, but with an even cozier and homier feel.
In today’s world most of us aren’t living in a fairytale cottage at the end of a stone path in the forest. Even if you live in a small apartment in a big city, you can take these simple decorating techniques and add a touch of cottage core style to your home. This will lighten up your space and create that airy and relaxing environment you spend so much time daydreaming over on Instagram and Pinterest.
Floral Curtains
A sweet and simple floral curtain can quickly do exactly this for your living room. There is just something about curtains that can instantly make any space feel a little more like home. Think about it. Usually when you rent an apartment the window dressing is pretty minimal, and certainly not aesthetically pleasing. It’s usually a simple set of pull blinds or those clunky vertical sliding blinds. These options get the job done in that they allow for a bit of privacy and control of glare… but that is pretty much where the benefit of these options end. They certainly don’t provide a hominess or a sense of design.
By adding romantic floral curtains you will instantly level up your living space. Adding curtains is one of the easiest ways for renters to make their house feel more like a home. Floral curtains add a personal touch without the amount of effort painting requires. Plus, in a lot of rental spaces you aren’t allowed to add personal touches, like wallpaper or paint. Hanging floral curtains is the perfect way to add a feminine, cottage core touch to your space without damaging your walls. There is just something about a soft, romantic, floral curtain that can bring the whole space together.
Choose a Floral Pattern
First things first, what floral pattern best fits your personality? Are you more of a rose princess or a sunflower goddess? Imagine what flowers you would have growing outside your dream cottage in the forest. Find a floral curtain pattern that reflects that dream aesthetic.
There is something about a soft moss that I just adore, and I find the color green incredibly soothing. I choose these Penelope Moss curtains from Pepper and they add the perfect cottage core touch to my living space. I love that the simple pattern plays off the soft white. It brightens up my space, lets just enough light in, and helps soften the corners of my living area. Just with this simple touch and I am one step closer to the cottage in the forest I envision.
Choose A Heading Type
The heading is how the curtain will attach to the rod you hung above your window. If you plan on leaving them open all the time you can go for a simple rod pocket, where the curtain is stitched closed and you slide the curtain directly onto the rod. I live on the second story and like to look out into my courtyard, so this option was perfect for me.
If you plan on opening and closing your curtains often for privacy or glare prevention a ring or pinch pleat may be a better option for you. These involve extra hardware which make it easier for the curtain to slide along the rod.
Add Other Cozy Cottage Core Touches
Finally after you’ve hung your curtains and made your space feel a little more like a cozy cottage, add in some other little bits of whimsy. Plants are a great way to bring that cottage core garden right into your home. You could also consider adding some mismatched pillows in other soft florals to play off the curtains. Cottage core is all about soft romantic touches that help make your apartment feel a little more like a home.
