How Can I be a Better Role Model?

by RAKI WRIGHT

Being a good role model can allow you to positively influence those around you. This could involve siblings, older generations, colleagues, employees, and, of course, your own children.

You may want to consider some of the ways that you currently interact with others, and even adhere to regulations, to see where any improvements may be able to be made. These could allow you to live more safely, help you to be kinder to others, and even make you feel happier and more confident with the person you are.

Considering the ways that you manage your vehicle and driving requirements could be a good first step towards becoming a better role model. The use of car insurance in Washington State can be put into place to help to protect anyone who you may come into contact with when driving. Car insurance might seem like a waste of money, especially if you have driven for many years yet never been involved in a road traffic collision, but it serves an important purpose.

Whether you are the victim or the driver at fault, insurance can help to cover the cost of repairing a vehicle, help with medical bills that arise from the incident, and even aid with legal fees. A comprehensive policy may allow you to receive financial aid for your own vehicle, passengers, or own needs, while standard liability cover may only help with third parties involved. You may be able to reduce the associated payments for your cover by opting for pay-per-mile insurance, rather than an annual estimation of how far you might be likely to travel.

The relationship you have with food and drink can also imply whether or not you are a good role model for those around you. You might find it a lot easier to convince your children or other family members to eat a healthier, more balanced diet if you are also eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and other good nutritional food types. Cutting back on the number of sodas you consume, and even alcoholic beverages may also set a good impression for those around you. Where children are involved, they may take these teachings into adulthood, to reduce the likelihood of alcohol dependency, an unhealthy relationship with food, and even struggles with obesity.

Being responsible with alcohol and other vices can also help you to inspire others and to be a better role model for your children. Even if you have a reputation as being the life and soul of the party, consider your relationship with alcohol and the negative influence your habits could be having on your children and your own repute.

Learning how to apologize when you are wrong, and genuinely mean it, could also be important. It can sometimes be hard to admit that you are in the wrong and to acknowledge this fault to anyone you might have hurt. In particular, you may also want to get into the habit of saying sorry to your children when you have broken a promise or lost your temper. This can help to show others that you hold yourself accountable for your actions, and show the types of behaviors that you expect from others.

The way you handle stress and deal with inconvenience is also important when it comes to setting an example for your children and those around you. If you fly off the handle at the slightest problem and make everyone around you feel on-edge and anxious then you’re not only being disrespectful but could possibly have underlying issues that you need to personally address. Of course, that’s not to say that you should pretend that everything is perfectly fine when it isn’t! If you have young children at home, then it’s important that they understand that stress is a part of everyday life, but it’s how they respond and manage it that makes a difference. You can demonstrate some of the better ways to handle stress, such as breathing exercises, talking it through or even going for a walk to clear your mind. This approach will not only make you a better role model and parent but also set you apart from your colleagues and improve the quality of your life.

Changing some of your pre-existing habits may be quite challenging at first, especially if these have been in place for years. However, in doing so, you may be able to grow as a person, keep others safer, and pass on some great skill sets and knowledge to younger generations. Contrary to common belief, you don’t have to be an influencer, a celebrity or a TV personality to fit the criteria of a role model. Everyone has the ability and opportunity to influence and inspire others and make the world a better place.

If you’re hoping to make a difference and set a good example for your children, your colleagues or your peers, then consider the points above.
