There will be many moms who will not receive a gift they want this Christmas because they won’t ask for one. What if all she had to do was ask?
To get what you want, you have to actually ask.
It goes against our very nature as women and moms to take care of ourselves. To take this a step further, we would never think to take care of ourselves first.
So, before you get mad at your husband, kids, or other friends and family, take the first step and ask. Is this new territory for you? Here are a few tips to get you started.
1. First, know what you want.
If it’s not clear to you (or anyone else) what YOU want, how can you get it? The more clarity you have about what you want, the better. Learn, figure out, or discover exactly what you want.
What item would be a nice complement to my current wardrobe? Is there a convenience I’ve been missing? Did I see someone else with something that sparked an idea?
2. Second, ask for what you want.
Don’t talk in circles around it, hint about it, or talk about others who have it. Just ask.
Son, I would like you to fix me breakfast. Daughter, I would like you to draw a beautiful picture for me.
Husband, I would be over the moon if you got me pink roses. Now, that wasn’t so bad, was it?
3. Finally, be straight-forward, crystal clear, and very specific about what you want.
Make it ridiculously clear what you’re asking for. Be direct about what you want, who it’s from, and when you want it. The more specific and direct you can be, the better.
Honey, could you and I go out for brunch at The Outback Steakhouse around 1? Do you think your brother could watch the kids for us?
Although there are many times when I don’t communicate my wishes and needs clearly to others, I do take responsibility when I don’t get what I had wanted.
I understand the sentiment that certain things shouldn’t have to be asked for and that certain things should just be understood. Life is much more simple when we ask for what we want, allow our loved ones to rally around us, and believe that they will follow through.
