Delaware is a state situated in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. At just 96 miles long and ranging between 9 and 35 miles across, it is the second-smallest of the American states. This is after Rhode Island.

For those who want to know more about the U.S. state of Delaware, we shall look to Explore Wilmington Delaware, and two of its neighborhoods in this article. Then, we can decide where the best places are while on vacation in these parts. If you have not yet considered next year’s travel plans, this article may just persuade you to put Delaware at the top of your list. So, let’s learn more.

Wilmington

Wilmington is a city in Delaware that lies on the Christina and Delaware rivers. A place to seek out is the Hagley Museum. This is because its grounds include the du Pont gunpowder works that date to 1802. As well, there is a Georgian-style home to admire. Anyone into history will appreciate this part of Delaware.

Another fact about Wilmington is that it is the Corporate Capital of America. It is also the largest downtown in the state of Delaware. This makes it a key place to visit when in Delaware.

For tourists, there is more than just one top-class museum and some very good restaurants. Anyone looking for a beach will find that from Wilmington, DE it is 91 miles by road and just 74.60 miles as a straight line distance. So, not that far if you are wanting this experience to be a part of your vacation.

Dover

Dover is the Capital and also the second-largest of the cities of Delaware. This makes it one of the places to visit while in these parts.

A place to see while here is the Old State House (1791) and the Biggs Museum of American Art.

The Old State House acted as Delaware’s capitol during the early years of the United States. It continued to serve as the state capitol with modifications and additions until 1933.

The museum has displays of decorative art as well as antique items and some local pieces. If you enjoy looking at art or objects then you will find the contents of the museum fascinating. Included among the artwork are collections of paintings, illustrations, and sculptures.

Newark

Newark was discovered by Scots-Irish and Welsh settlers in 1694. It was, however, not until 1758 that the town was established officially when it received a charter from George II of Great Britain.

In 1833, a charter to a new school was granted. This is called Newark College. The following year, Newark Academy and Newark College would join forces to become Delaware College. So, if you enjoy Newark so much that you want to stay, education steeped in history is nearby.

For some geography, Newark is approximately halfway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. The area has a vast amount of public parkland to enjoy for free. We all love open space and you can find it here. Nearby, you have White Clay Creek State Park and White Clay Creek Preserve to enjoy. As well, there is Middle Run Valley Natural Area. So, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature and feel rejuvenated while on vacation.

Despite all the greenery, several highways pass through Newark, so you will not feel isolated and the transportation system will be good.

It is nice to know when you visit any place that there will be plenty to see and do. Any hint of history and education involved will make a place ideal for a family. Where there are parks, we have a place to enjoy ourselves and just get away from it all. A big part of going on vacation is to relax to an extent that we return to our normal work fully relaxed and ready to carry it out for a few months until our next trip away alone or with the family. Different kinds of experiences are possible in Delaware. In particular, when you discover places such as Wilmington.
