8 Traits of Toxic People

by RAKI WRIGHT

When we tend to hang out in a group of people, we get to see different kinds of people. Many are our best friends, and others are people we meet because we have mutual friends with me, and some are our colleagues.

Every different person you meet holds a new set of traits that you may or may not like.

Some may have a personality that automatically connects to you while, on the other hand, some may be toxic and bad for your mental health. A toxic person is any individual that has a harmful mindset and hurts your mental health.

When an individual spends time with a toxic person, they end up feeling exhausted, emotionally drained, unhealthy, and maybe worthless. Many individuals don’t know how to differentiate a toxic person and the right person as they may let the bad things that are happening to them slide as if nothing has happened, so it’s essential to be aware of abusive behavior and research by reading articles like Relational Aggression: Silent Harm In Social Circles, which takes a look into symptoms of toxic behaviors such as snarkiness, manipulation, public humiliation, and more.

A toxic person owns many different traits. Some of them are as follows to help you identify one to help you grow.

A toxic individual never apologizes

For a toxic person, nothing is ever their fault, and why would anyone apologize when they think they cannot make a mistake. Humans can make mistakes on even the smallest of things, but if you think you are perfect and can’t be wrong, then there is some serious problem with you as a human being.

It is impossible to have a conversation and an argument with such people.

They can pin their mistakes on you and blame you for making them feel bad even when they are not feeling bad. So, with a toxic person, it never comes to an apology.

Instead, they may make you feel so bad for the healthy behavior that you might end up apologizing even for the right thing you did.

They are masters of manipulation

A toxic person will always try to get their way even when you suggest something better they will manipulate you to do what they want. Mostly, they spend time with you so that they get to know your weak and strong points due to which they gain power over you with time.

This power then allows them to control and manipulate you. They can use your weakness against you to accomplish what they want from you and not even feel bad for using you, this can have a significant impact on your mental health and can affect you in numerous ways.

They are irresponsible towards your feelings

If a toxic individual is frustrated due to something that happened with them, there is a good chance that they will try to pin it on you and your actions. They will make you believe how you are responsible for feeling this way.

For example, they can be mad about something their parents stopped them for doing as their parents asked them to quit smoking.

They will make you the reason for their parents asking them to quit smoking as you might not be a smoker. A toxic person can defend even what’s wrong and might not also stand a chance against them.

They are judgmental

There is an old saying that says, “Look in the mirror before you judge someone else,” but this is not the mantra of toxic people. They will judge you for all the right things that you have done.

May it be your clothes, shoes, the way you look, the way you walk, your career, your life choice, the food you eat, and whatnot.

For example, many individuals buy shrooms online in Canada as it’s their choice, and the product makes them feel good about themselves, but a toxic person will even judge them for feeling good.

Positive criticism must always be welcomed with open hands, but what a toxic person does not only humiliates you in the worst way but also brings you down. They do it from time to time and might pass comments like I was joking, don’t be a baby, or get over it, which are equally hurtful.

A toxic person is non-supportive

A toxic person never supports or encourages you, yet they are the first ones to discourage you and your ideas. The discouragement they bring in another person’s life can be a source of peace and satisfaction in theirs.

They hate it when someone is doing well in life or is making progress or is achieving more essential things in life before them.

Picking faults in whatever you do is their favorite hobby. For any relationship to work, it is essential to know the best and the worst parts about a person and the link you have with them; therefore, evaluate and then decided if it is worth ruining your mental peace.

They make sure you know they can’t listen to you

You can be a great listener and be ready to give them time when they want to rant or cry over any problem they have been facing in their life. When it comes to them listening to you and what you have been going through, you are told they are busy, or they may pretend they are looking to you while they are texting someone else on their phone.

You can be telling them the essential thing in the world, and they will not care for it. These people are not only full of themselves, but their motive is to get out what they want and not what is needed to give.

They love to interrupt while you are talking

During a conversation, you may not say anything when they are talking, but when you are talking, they will make sure to interrupt you so that they can add something of their own. Whatever is the discussion and whatever be the topic, they will always have something to add to it.

Sometimes when you are standing in a group trying to have a conversation, they can ask you to shut up so that they can add on whatever they want as if what you were saying held no value and meaning.

Toxic people are attention seekers

Everyone has had many different toxic people in their life, but one thing that must be common amongst all will be this that they will all be attention seekers. They will grab the attention that is being given to someone else and make its way around themselves.

For example, you scored an A grade, and everyone is happy for you, they will say they were the one who taught you, so you got an A shifting all the attention towards them.

A toxic person is never good for your mental health, and anything or any person that disturbs the mental peace of your heart should be given up for a healthier and happy life.
