Statistically speaking, the peak time for car accidents happens between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on a Friday evening. This is largely because drivers tend to rush home from work at this time, leading to greater stress and an increased chance of making mistakes on the road.

Whether commuting to work or school, driving for errands, or taking a road trip with friends and family, you should always drive responsibly to avoid car accidents caused by over-speeding either your own or that of others on the road.

Here are some tips that will help reduce the risk of car accidents caused by over-speeding:

Pay Attention to the Road

Driving while tired or while you’re otherwise distracted is dangerous and can lead to car accidents caused by over-speeding.

While it’s understandable to feel drowsy after a long day of work or as you drive long distances with young children in the backseat, make sure you stay alert and don’t let yourself get too tired to drive. Avoid caffeine (especially if you’re driving at night), and don’t let other passengers distract you.

Maintain Your Vehicle and Check Your Tires

Your car should be in tip-top shape before you hit the road. If you notice your tires are worn out, get them replaced immediately. Keeping your car in good condition will not only save money on gas, but it can also potentially prevent car accidents caused by over-speeding.

Also, be careful when checking your tires; make sure there are no nails or shards of metal stuck in them, which could cause damage to your car and lead to a sudden blowout.

Safe Distance from the Vehicle in Front of You

It’s easy to fall into the habit of tailgating other cars, especially when you’re in a hurry. However, tailgating can lead to over-speeding and can also put you at risk of a car accident caused by over-speeding.

Remember, the minimum safe distance between your car and the car in front of you is two seconds.

Avoid Driving During Rush Hour, Bad Weather, or Slippery Roads

If you can help it, avoid driving during rush hour when you expect traffic to be especially heavy. Driving during rush hour can put you at risk of car accidents caused by over-speeding (especially if you’re in a hurry) and can also lead to driving on very busy roads with few places to pull over.

Avoid driving in bad weather or slippery roads whenever possible. Driving in the rain or on icy roads can be very dangerous, as it’s easy to lose control of your car.

Always Keep an Eye Out for Pedestrians

Pedestrians have the right-of-way in crosswalks; however, some people don’t follow the rules of the road and may dart out into the street without looking both ways to ensure it’s safe.

Keep an eye out for pedestrians, especially when driving at night or in bad weather, when it can be difficult to see. Always sound your horn when you’re near a pedestrian (or another car) to avoid a car accident caused by over-speeding.

Don’t Drive When You’re Drowsy or Feeling Sick

Even if you’re driving a short distance to drop off the kids at school, ensure you feel alert and well-rested. Driving when you’re feeling drowsy or sick (from a head cold or otherwise) can easily lead to a car accident caused by over-speeding.

If you notice you’re feeling drowsy, pull over and rest for a few minutes; you’ll be glad you did.

Go Easy on the Gas Pedal

Don’t mash the gas pedal if you need to accelerate, especially if you’re about to pass another car quickly. Instead, ease up on the gas pedal and try to accelerate gradually. This will help you avoid over-speeding and hopefully prevent car accidents caused by over-speeding.

You may try avoiding accidents, but other road users can hit your car due to over-speeding. That’s why you need to be in contact with reputable legal experts like Fernandez Firm car accident lawyers, who will come to your rescue.

Driving can be an enjoyable way to get to work, school, the grocery store, or wherever else you need to go. However, driving safely is important to avoid car accidents caused by over-speeding. By following these tips, you can help lower your risk of an accident caused by over-speeding and enjoy a more stress-free commute.
