4 Tips for Planning a Decades Themed Party

by Emma Radebaugh

Planning a decades-themed party can be an exciting way to celebrate with friends and family. These events allow attendees to step back in time and experience a specific era’s culture, fashion, and music. Whether you choose the roaring ’20s, groovy ’70s, or the neon glow of the ’80s, hosting a fun event is key.

The word “party” is neatly written on a calendar on the twentieth day; there’s a silver pen lying on top of the calendar.

Check out some must-know tips for planning a decades-themed party that guests will rave about!

Decide on a Theme

While you can keep the theme general and allow guests to dress according to any decade they’d like, selecting a specific era can make things feel more cohesive. Centering your party around a specific decade lets you plan your decor, music, and food accordingly.

If you’re unsure which decade you and your guests would like best, text and ask everyone to cast their votes. This will help you decide on a theme and get everyone excited and involved in the planning process.

Location and Venue

Deciding on the location and venue for your party is an important tip for planning a decades-themed party. If you’re hosting a small gathering, your home may be the perfect spot. Having the party at home is generally the most affordable option and eliminates time restraints.

However, if you’re planning a larger celebration or don’t want to deal with the cleanup, consider renting a space. Common options for this include a community center, event hall, or party room in a restaurant. Book the venue in advance, especially if it’s a popular spot.

Buy a Retro Outfit

When you host a retro party, picking the perfect outfit is crucial to capturing the essence of the chosen decade. Search online for inspiration, taking note of what the celebrities of the chosen decade wore. Once you have a good idea of vintage fashion, shop for retro clothing that reflects this.

Ensure guests also know to dress up for the occasion by including it on the invitation. This will add to the party’s atmosphere and give guests a chance to get creative with their outfits.

Plan the Perfect Menu

No party is complete without delicious food and drinks. Research popular dishes and beverages from your chosen decade to create a menu that complements your theme.

For a 1950s party, consider serving classic diner fare, such as burgers, fries, and milkshakes. A ’20s party could feature prohibition-style cocktails and finger foods.

Whether you’re throwing a retro-themed bash or a futuristic soirée, planning a decades-themed party can be a fun and creative way to celebrate. By following these tips, you can create a memorable event that your guests will be talking about for years to come. So, break out your vintage attire or futuristic gadgets and get ready to transport your guests to another time!
