Your Kids Love Music? Here’s How To Help Them Choose A Guitar For Their Lessons

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure.

by RAKI WRIGHT

If you have a child who loves music, one of the best things you can do for them is help them start taking guitar lessons. This instrument can be a great outlet for creativity and self-expression, and it can also teach them valuable skills like discipline and concentration.

It is also highly versatile, so whichever genre of music your child gets into, they will be able to find a way to play it on guitar. But with so many different types of guitars on the market, it can be difficult to know which one is right for your child. Therefore, in this article, we’ll discuss some tips for helping your child choose the right guitar for their lessons.

Consider Their Age and Size

The first thing you need to take into account when choosing a guitar for your child is their age and size. If they are very young or small, they will likely need a smaller guitar, such as a ¾ size or ½ size. These guitars are usually recommended for children ages 6 and under. If your child is older or taller, they will probably be more comfortable with a full-size guitar. Remember that your child will have to be able to hold the instrument in their lap or on a stand, so make sure it is not too big or bulky for them. In general, since kids have small hands, playing thin-neck guitars is generally easier for them. So, if your child has their heart set on a particular type of guitar (like a Stratocaster or Les Paul), make sure to get one with a thinner neck.

Consider Their Level of Interest and Dedication

Before you go out and buy your child a guitar, it is important to consider their level of interest and dedication. If they are only mildly interested in playing music, or if they tend to lose interest in things quickly, it might not be worth investing in an expensive instrument. In this case, you might want to consider renting or borrowing a guitar instead. This way, if your child does decide to give up on playing after a few weeks or months, you will not be stuck with an expensive instrument that you cannot use. On the other hand, if your child is highly dedicated to learning how to play and seems very serious about it, then it might be worth investing in a high-quality guitar that they can grow into. In this case, you can always sell the guitar later on if your child decides they no longer want to play.

Consider Their Musical Preferences

When choosing a guitar for your child, it is also important to consider their musical preferences. If they are interested in playing classical or Spanish music, then they will need a different type of guitar than if they want to play rock or blues. Different genres of music require different types of guitars and techniques, so make sure you get one that is suitable for the style of music your child wants to play. For instance, classical and flamenco guitars have nylon strings, while most other styles of music use steel strings. Acoustic guitars are also generally better for softer styles of music, while electric guitars are better for heavier styles such as rock and metal.

Ask Their Teacher for Advice

If you are still unsure about which guitar to get for your child, one of the best things you can do is ask their teacher for advice. They will be able to tell you what type of guitar is best suited for your child’s level of interest and ability, as well as their musical preferences. In some cases, the teacher might even have a specific model or make of guitar in mind that they think would be perfect for your child. And in most cases,  they will be able to get you a discount on the instrument if you decide to buy it through their studio. So, if you are stuck, make sure to ask their opinion before making a final decision.

Try Out Different Guitars

Finally, before you commit to buying a particular guitar, your child must have a chance to try out different types and models. This way, they can see what feels comfortable for them and what suits their playing style the best. In most cases, music stores will allow you to rent or borrow instruments so that you can take them home and try them out for a few days. Alternatively, you could also ask around to see if any of your friends or family members have a guitar that your child could use. By letting them try out different instruments, you can be sure that you are getting them the perfect guitar for their needs.

As you can see,  there are a few things you need to keep in mind when choosing a guitar for your child. By taking the time to consider all of the abovementioned, you can be sure that you are getting them the perfect instrument for their needs. And if you are still unsure about which guitar to get, make sure to ask your teacher for advice. Just remember, the most important thing is that your child enjoys playing and that they can progress at their own pace. And with the right guitar, they will be well on their way to becoming the next great musician.
