What To Keep and What Not To Keep for Your Donation Pile

by Emma Radebaugh

As your children get older, it may be difficult to part with their first clothes or toys. These sentimental items can be hard to donate, but giving them a new home could assist another child in need. Plus, starting a donation pile helps you declutter your home and think in a new mindset. Tidy your home and improve your mental well-being by understanding what to keep and what not to keep for your donation pile.

A box of clean and functioning toys. A child is holding the box, ready to donate the pile to a new home.

Items to Keep

Sentimental Items

Family heirlooms, gifts from loved ones, or items that remind you of special moments are important to keep out of the donation pile. These items hold memories that you can cherish for years to come.

Pristine Clothing

Keep clothes that your kids wear regularly and that fit well. Ensure their clothing is free from holes or tears so they can continue to wear it.

What to Donate

Outgrown Clothing

Donate clothing your child has outgrown. If they’re clean and without tears, they’ll be perfect for homes that may need extra clothes for their little ones.

Books and Toys

If you’re unsure what to keep and what not to keep while donating, consider how your items could make another family’s day. Your child’s old toys could be one of the best toys to donate to another child. Bring joy to a child in need by donating toys and books your little one doesn’t play with anymore.

Things to Avoid Donating

Some items might not have a reason to stay in your home but also aren’t necessary for the donation pile. Consider these items for your community’s recycling pile or dispose of them properly to declutter your home.

Damaged Items

Avoid donating items that no longer have a purpose in any home. Recycle or dispose of anything broken or damaged.

Old Electronics

Old electronics from toys that no longer work should be recycled properly. There are many places that accept electronics to recycle. If your electronics stop working, bring them to an electronics recycling center.

Make informed decisions when cluttering your home by knowing what to place in your donation pile. By decluttering your home and donating useful items, another family in need can rest easy knowing they can provide their child with clothes and toys. Practice sustainable habits and give back to your community effectively by giving your old items a new home.
