What to Expect When Hiring and Training New Employees

Owning a moving business in New York can be quite a challenge. Especially if you don’t have the right crew to help you out and ensure that everything runs as smoothly as butter. Finding a good moving crew represents a big part of the success of a business since they are the ones that will mostly be interacting with your customers.

Most often, going through the recruitment process for NYC movers takes time and can give you a couple of headaches, especially if you’re just starting out in the moving industry and have never done this before. Even experienced business owners though can have a hard time getting through it.

That is why you need to very carefully organize and plan every step of the way. One important preliminary step you need to take in order to set out in an organized manner is asking yourself (and answering) a couple of such as how does the perfect crew looks like, how many people do I need and afford to hire and when do I need them.

The answers to these questions should be able to help you create a plan for your recruitment process.

Broadening your research will bring more candidates

One of the most important things when hiring new workers is being consistent with a plan from the very beginning. This will ensure that all of your potential employees are equally qualified.

There are multiple methods to which you can turn when you are trying to find new employees such as:

  • Ask your other employees for referrals. Endorsements from people you know and trust go a long way towards helping you attract good candidates.
  • Post your announcement on a trusted site like Linkedin. These types of platforms have been specifically created to connect professionals, like legal assistants, from all domains so there’s a good chance you’ll find someone good here.
  • Post on social media. There are numerous groups for specific jobs on Facebook so chances are that you will find some good CVs.
  • Post an ad in a local paper. It’s true that we live in the era of digitization and social media, but some people still like to read their morning newspapers and scroll through the job section.
  • Craigslist, Indeed, and local vacancy directories. Many people search for jobs on Craigslist so you will definitely get a wide audience and most probably a good number of candidacies.

Narrowing your choices in preliminary interviews will help

The first step is going through the applications and tossing aside the ones that clearly don’t fit your criteria. After that, you should start conducting phone interviews which will give you a better idea of what your potential new employees are really like.

After this, you can schedule and conduct the in-person interviews. If you have a limited number of open positions you will naturally fill them with the best applicants.

But that sometimes means that you will renounce some good candidates. Well, don’t lose that CV just yet! Things change and you might need more workers in the future and they may improve their CVs in the meantime.

So, keep the CVs of these candidates and create a database. The next time you’ll have a vacancy, you can contact them and speed up the process!

New employees will need training

If you have hired someone with no previous experience, you need to train them on how to do the job you’ve hired them to do, at least in the beginning. One of the things you need to emphasize is the way they interact with customers.

It is really important to explain to your new employees how to handle customers. They need to look presentable, clean, and professional. Having your crew appear clean sends the message that they can be trusted to take good care of the items they are handling.

Another very important thing you need to pay attention to when training your crew is explaining to them the importance of moving documentation. These are important both for having good organization on a moving day and protecting the company from potential damages. Your movers need to pay attention to offer customers all the necessary documentation for signing.

But the most important part of training your new crew is to prepare them for the job itself. This means going through the entire process and carefully explaining how each step should be done, especially the safety measures. Some of the most important things you need to cover include:

  • Packing
  • Lifting
  • Specific moving
  • Safety
