If you have just had a positive pregnancy test confirmed, congrats to you; it isn’t every day that you find out you are going to be a mother and if this is your first pregnancy, there’s a lot to take on board.

You will no doubt be concerned about what you can eat (and drink), what you should avoid and whether you need to take any extra exercise.

We asked a medical practitioner for a few tips to ensure a smooth transition to motherhood.

  • Take an A-Z daily supplement – This is a time when you need all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients that your body needs for both of you. A tablet per day first thing in the morning ensures that your body has everything it needs to support and nourish both mum and baby.
  • Wear comfortable shoes – Now is not the time to be thinking about fashions and trends when it comes to footwear; you are going to put on weight, therefore it is important to wear shoes that are comfortable. Sports shoes are popular because they are soft and have good grip, which is essential.
  • Do some online research – There is a wealth of information on the web for pregnant women and new mums; Google is your best friend and can find the answers to all your questions and some! There are social media groups for expectant mothers, where you can hook up with like-minded people, plus there are thousands of online women’s mags that are devoted to new mums and developing parenting. You will need to take a look at pregnancy clothes and order a few items online.
  • Avoid soft cheeses – Some soft cheeses such as Brie and feta contain bacteria that can harm your baby. Stay away from fish that contains high levels of mercury.
  • Eat small & often – If you are the kind of girl that normally fuels up twice a day, you might want to change to eating smaller portions and increase the frequency of your meals. This helps in several ways; your digestive system doesn’t have to work too hard and you will feel less sleepy.
  • Avoid alcohol – If you love a glass of wine or two, put that on hold until junior is born; ask your partner to get a bottle of your favourite wine ready for your homecoming. It’s only 40 weeks in total and you are giving your baby the best possible start to life. Click here for ways to boost your child’s memory.
  • Be careful with over-the-counter medications – When you are with child, it is important to read all medication labels and mention to any pharmacist of GP that you are pregnant. Simply put, you can’t afford to take any chances when it comes to ingesting drugs.
  • Be around young mums & babies – Once your pregnancy is confirmed, make a point of connecting with a few young mums and this will help you make the right preparations. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and pay attention to all advice; the best way to prepare for something is to talk to someone who has already been down that path.

This is a very exciting time in your life and with some preparation and research, you will take to motherhood like a duck to water.
