We use our memories every day, whether we’re trying to recall where we placed our car keys or mentally jotting down where we place items around the house. Children of all ages need to do activities that challenge their mind, so it continues developing. Start practicing these ways to boost your child’s memory.
Incorporate the Senses
It’s a lot easier to remember something if you’ve experienced it since memory relates to the senses. As an example, we avoid certain foods because we have memories of not liking the way they taste. Find ways your child can engage their senses by using vibrant colors, smells, and tastes in different pastimes. One activity you could do is have them locate various objects throughout the house.
Play Games
Try playing games that require your child to think, such as Memory Match. Likewise, you could do a puzzle together. They’ll put their memory to the test by searching out the pieces in a pile to complete a picture. Strengthening memory is just one of the many ways puzzles boost the mind.
Create Songs
A fun way to boost your child’s memory is to turn memory enhancement into a song-writing session with your child. Whether you’re using instruments or just writing up lyrics, the patterns and rhythms will get stuck in your child’s head. You can even ask them to sing the special song to you to test how well they remember it.
Chunk It Out
If you’re helping your child understand a new concept, break it down into smaller bits of information— trying to comprehend too much information at once is a lot for anyone, especially little kids. Children usually struggle to recall information when they’re taught too much at once. So, break things down and take breaks as you help your child learn.
Have Them Teach You
A great way to prove you know a topic is to teach it because it requires understanding and recall, so play school with your child and have them be the teacher. Push your child’s memory by asking them to educate you on what they’re learning in school. They may even discover new connections between topics or mnemonics that help them boost their memory.
