Most of us have yards outside our homes, but they’re not always easy to care for. Life gets busy, and most of our free time goes toward maintaining the home’s interior. However, keeping up with its exterior is also important.

Tips for Maintaining Your Garden and Landscaping

Creating a low-maintenance landscape is the key to having to spend less time on yard work. If you’re unsure of how to start caring for your property, consider a few helpful tips for maintaining your garden and landscaping.

Water Deeply Instead of Frequently

It’s no secret that plants and trees need water to stay healthy, but that doesn’t mean you have to do it daily. If your area is experiencing rainfall, you don’t need to water them. However, during the hot summer months or drought, you may have to water them by hand.

Rather than providing a little water daily, consider watering your plants and trees deeply once a week. If the ground’s surface is still damp, your plants and trees don’t need additional water.

Protect Your Plants From Animals

Animals are the most common threat to plants, especially those that produce fruits and vegetables. If you have fruit trees on your property, consider putting up fencing or another barrier to protect them from intrusive animals.

Unfortunately, deer, rabbits, bears, and other animals can make a mess of your yard, which will cause you to spend more time on yard work. By taking preventative measures to protect your plants and trees from animals, you’ll save time in the long run.

Keep Your Gardening Tools Clean

Keeping your plants and trees healthy can be challenging, but having the right tools and knowing the best practices for trimming trees are effective solutions. While gardening tools are an essential part of maintaining your landscaping, they can also harbor bacteria.

If you use a specific tool on a sick plant and then use it on a healthy one, you can spread the disease, bacteria, or pests. This may cause more work for you, as treating plant illness takes time. Consider cleaning your gardening tools with soap and water between uses to prevent any unwanted spread of disease or bacteria to healthy plants and trees.

Make It a Family Chore

Doing yard work isn’t the most exciting thing in the world, but it’s much more enjoyable when you do it with others. Making it a family chore is a great way to finish it quickly and spend time together in nature. Rather than doing everything yourself, consider giving each family member a specific job to ensure you finish the job in a timely manner.

With these tips for maintaining your garden and landscaping, you can make the most of your time spent on yard work. Nature is beautiful, but sometimes it requires a little help to reach its fullest potential.
