Though it might be the last thing you want to do after a long day, cleaning is essential to keeping a home healthy—especially when you have an infant.

In fact, you’ll need to devote some of your efforts to their room, specifically, if you want to limit their exposure to germs and toxins. Use these four tips for cleaning your baby’s nursery to get the most out of this process and protect their overall health.

Use Eco-Friendly Cleaners

Some of our standard household cleaners contain an alarming number of chemicals that can harm your child. For this reason, consider using cleaning products that utilize environmentally friendly ingredients when washing the nursery. Some examples of these household staples include vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice—which can actually tackle particularly tough stains.

Target Germ Hot Spots

You also want to make sure that you’re cleaning all of the room’s dirtiest places when you undergo this process. These areas are often where your child spends most of their time and, therefore, present the most significant risk of making them sick. This often includes the crib (both the bedding and the wooden frame), your baby’s toys, and the changing table.

Ensure Floors Are Free of Clutter

Another crucial tip for cleaning your baby’s nursery is to spend some of this time decluttering the floors. Sanitizing is vital, but allowing toys to sit around can also become a safety hazard to a crawling infant. If you want to ensure that this is a danger-free environment for your newborn, you must be willing to remove unnecessary items.

Repeat This Process Often

Most importantly, you’ll want to repeat the cleaning process at least once a week to ensure its effectiveness. Since children aren’t capable of keeping their environment clean yet, it’s up to you to keep up with their natural messes and protect them from the dirt they leave behind. Otherwise, you’re putting them in a position where they’re more likely to catch a cold.
