The Most Common Marital Problems and How to Solve Them

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure.

by RAKI WRIGHT

If you have been married for a considerable amount of time and have recently noticed that your relationship with your spouse had deteriorated or suffered a breach of trust, you may be wondering what your next steps should be.

It can be tempting to plod along and ignore the elephant in the room, but this is only likely to end in disaster down the line as underlying feelings and emotions eventually bubble to the surface. To familiarise yourself with the most common marital problems and how to solve them, continue reading.

Financial disagreements or disputes

If you are in the process of dealing with a financial disagreement or dispute within your marriage, it may reassure you to know that it is one of the most commonly cited, if not the most commonly cited, problems that married couples face throughout the world. This does, however, not necessarily render it normal or acceptable with financial disagreements or disputes usually also symbolic of an underlying power struggle, differing historic backgrounds, or contradicting core beliefs. It can be overcome by establishing a joint bank account, discussing your shopping habits on a regular basis, and setting clear and achievable expectations ahead of any major or life-changing purchases.

Arguments over children

If you have children or struggle to come to an agreement over whether to have children, this can cause considerable strain within a marriage. It can be a wonderful and life-changing decision to make to decide to expand your family but if both parties are on completely different pages, it can do more harm than good with even the strongest of bonds tested by the introduction of a brand-new member of the family. If you have decided to get a divorce for whatever reason, you must also remember to calculate potential child maintenance payments ahead of time to ensure you and your ex-spouse will be financially stable enough to continue to care for your children through a decision that has been mutually agreed upon by everyone involved.

Busy or contrasting schedules

If you work traditional working hours but your spouse works unsociable hours, you may have become accustomed to spending the vast majority of your time alone or with different people. This can lead to marriage problems with couples with busy or contrasting schedules more likely to be stressed by failing to take sufficient care of themselves and their bodies, feeling less connected to their partner and, as a result, gradually coming to enjoy the feeling of separateness that exists between them, and no longer successfully working together as a team and fighting over minor problems that they otherwise would have sorted through clear and frequent communication and cooperation.

Bad habits

If you and your spouse have established a series of bad habits over the years, it can be difficult to break free from the mold and return to the bliss of a happy and healthy married life as time continues to rumble on. If spouses are ready and willing to face up to a couple of ugly home truths, however, bad habits can be broken, and an otherwise happy and healthy marriage can be saved from destruction. This can include nit-picking, poor personal hygiene, becoming lazy, being condescending, and unnecessary critiquing or criticizing.

If you are worried that your marriage may be deteriorating slowly or in front of your eyes, it may be worth taking the time to familiarise yourself with the most common marital problems and how to solve them. This includes financial disagreements or disputes, arguments over children, busy or contrasting schedules, and bad habits.
