It isn’t easy being somebody’s mom. Being a mom can become infinitely more challenging when tasked with interior decoration because it can be very time-consuming.
The hardest aspect of selecting furniture for the family home is filtering out what you like from what’s practical. You need to remember that if you have young children, there’s a very strong chance that they will destroy your furniture. Because of this, you need to buy sparingly and selectively.
This post will tell you about how you can buy furniture for your house effectively (and design it):
Bar Stools
Most kitchens these days are built with islands. Wooden bar stools complement islands very well. Wooden bar stools are a great addition because they are suitable for your home or business and look very attractive. The reason that they work well domestically and in professional settings is because they are sleek, tall, and very comfortable. They are great for houses with children in, because they are too high for many young children to climb. This means that they can’t be damaged. Children have a tendency to climb on things. If you have any low chairs in your house, it’s very likely that yours will be climbed all over, damaged, and used as play objects.
Varied Colours
When you are designing your children’s room, try out other colours besides pink and blue. These colours are commonly incorporated into children’s rooms, toys, clothes, and furniture. Boy for blues, and pink for girls. Ideally, your children’s room should match the rest of your home’s interior design. With that said, if your home’s design is beige throughout, it’s probably not a good idea to paint and decorate your children’s room beige, because any damage they cause will show up easily. Instead, you should opt for olive, brown, or grey. Buy furniture of different colours.
Display Books
Children can’t be trusted around fine art. If you are a fan of art and want a display case but can’t risk it with your children around, then why not display books as though they were artwork? Books are hardwearing and durable, so they won’t fall apart just because your child drops them or plays with them. If you are going to display books, then try to find first edition copies or books with interesting covers. In order for a book to become art, it has to stand out. Make sure that the shelves you buy are tall and aren’t easily climbed on.
Open Plan
Young children need room to run around. When you are designing your house or considering renovations, you should definitely incorporate open-plan living into its overall design. Open-plan living gives your children more room to be free and also allows you to monitor them when you are cooking or eating. It can be very dangerous to leave children alone in another room when you aren’t around, even if it is when you are cooking or preparing meals. If you are going to go for an open plan design, then try to leave a large open space where your children can play, instead of filling the room up with furniture.
Wooden Furniture
Around children, wooden furniture is best. The reason for this is that it can be very forgiving, is easy to maintain, and if damaged, can be repaired quite easily. If you are going to invest in wooden furniture, then light oak is a good choice. Dark wood shows scratches and marks, whereas light wood doesn’t. Oak is a hardwood, that isn’t damaged easily. It is also very heavy, so it will be nearly impossible for your children to knock over any of your oak furniture. You can buy small, coloured rubbers that you can apply to scratches that conceal them.
Adult-only Area
Designing a family home can be very challenging, mostly because you aren’t really allowed to create a safe haven for yourself that’s free from children. Well, if your home’s large enough, why not create an adult-only area? This could be a small room, a library, or an office. When your children go to sleep, you can retreat to the comfort of your home’s adult-only area and relax. If you do this, then you need to make sure that you punish your children if they go in there, so that they get the idea.
Wallpaper
One last thing to consider is using wallpaper. Wallpaper is a great addition to family homes because it covers up damage and marks very well. Because paint is blank, the smallest bit of damage is immediately apparent. If your child goes a little crazy with a marker pen in a room with wallpaper, it will be easier to clean up, and less obvious.
If you are designing your family home, then you need to bear all of the points outlined in this post in mind. The most important thing to consider is your children’s safety, so make sure that you choose furniture that’s too high for them to climb on, and try to incorporate open-plan living into your home’s design.
