As a dog owner, you need to properly have every tool that will make a great pet parent. For example, you need beds, mats, treats, and toys.
However, in this article, we will discuss a very important tool that you need to consider: the
retractable dog leash – iPetCompanion.

As you know, there are traditional leather or nylon leashes but you can also acquire retractable leashes, which also come in different styles. These types are different so it is important to know their characteristics before deciding.

Should you use a retractable leash?

It is a fact that some dog owners prefer using a retractable leash over a standard leash. It is particularly important when walking pups since it allows them to explore all the smells they want. It rounds up to that: retractable leashes make it possible for dogs to have very interesting walks. This doesn’t take into consideration the training of the dog.

Another great benefit is that if you use a retractable leash, you don’t have to maintain your dog’s pace! As you may know, this type of leash can let your dog wander freely while you keep your own pace. Of course, this depends entirely on the behavior of the dog and the length of the leash.

Why not use a retractable leash?

The main disadvantages of retractable leashes narrow down to training and safety. Retractable leashes can lead to a safety concern if your dog is not properly trained. Since this type of leash provides a lot of freedom to your dog, you need to make sure that no problems can be derived from his/her behavior. Walking on the sidewalk or in a park is a very normal routine but it can turn very dangerous if your pet is not trained. Therefore, when using retractable leashes, make sure to control the length to avoid any social disturbance.

Things to consider with a retractable leash

First of all, you need to know that not all pets are good candidates for retractable leashes. Since this type of leash doesn’t take into account the dog’s training, among other things, injuries and problems are always a possibility.

Accidents can happen as well. If you are not keeping an eye on your dog, he/she can wander off and get hit by a car, or fall into a hole. And it’s not only pets that can be injured by this type of leash, but humans can also be injured as well. You can get wrapped up in a long leash and fall to the ground!

A good piece of advice is to study the instructions when using retractable dog leashes. Test which is the appropriate length when walking your dog. Lastly, consider training your pet, not only because it is important before using retractable leashes, but also because a trained dog will save you a lot of problems.

Final thoughts

Overall, there some perks and problems with using retractable leashes. Training and safety are very important issues when using this type of leash. If you have any doubts, don’t hesitate to ask your vet if your dog is a good candidate for a retractable leash.
