Like sugar, fashion is a personal thing. While you should, and probably do, wear what makes you happy, also remember that different styles and cuts flatter different sizes and shapes of bodies in different ways, and the quickest way to make the most of your body (no matter what it looks like).
There is no shortage of women of all shapes and sizes across social media, who post their style finds, outfits, and discoveries to inspire others. There is a lot to be learnt from fashion bloggers who have a similar body shape to you, and as an added bonus, the slog work is done for you – all you need to do, is follow the learnings, and apply them to your own life!
Know your type
…and this doesn’t mean another person! The better knowledge you have of your own body type, their easier it becomes to dress to your strengths. Of course, you should wear clothing that you feel comfortable in, but when you know it is flattering and looks good, you will automatically feel great wearing it! Figure out as soon as you can whether you are a pear shape, apple shape, diamond, athletic, rectangular, or straight, and then dress accordingly for the maximum impact.
For many women, plus size clothing is an excuse to wear something baggy to cover up. This is one of the biggest mistakes you could make when dressing for a plus-sized body. Rather than covering up, it emphasizes lumps and bumps, and created a sack-like appearance. Rather, wear plus size clothing that accentuate your shape and buy them in the right size.
Emphasise what’s already good!
A little bit of accessorising makes a big difference! From a head-turning pair of earrings to a statement belt or a killer necklace, a little goes a long way in taking an already good outfit to Destination Great. There’s no need to over-accessorize either – too much makes it look like you are trying too hard, and the whole look will fall flat.
Size matters
Not to put too fine a point on it, but I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to wear the right size. Many people don’t want to admit to their actual size and try to get away with wearing clothing from when they were a smaller size. Avoid wearing clothes that don’t suit you by measuring yourself properly or getting a shop assistant to help you to determine your actual size.
Because there is no consistent sizing system, and many stores run with their own sizing system, it helps a lot to know what your actual measurements are, so that you can apply it to any sizing system, wherever you choose to shop.
This will also make online shopping a lot easier. Grab a tape measure, get your measurements, and go to town with certainty, knowing that you are buying for your size and not hanging onto an illusion. Pretending you are a size that you no longer are, doesn’t serve you – it just results in ill-fitting clothing, which does no one any favors.
