Most Problematic Types of Rodent Infestations

Rodent infestations can be more than just a nuisance—they’re a serious problem that impacts your home, health, and property. Different rodents cause different types of damage, but all carry risks that need immediate attention.

From chewing wires to burrowing through landscapes, learn more about the four most problematic types of rodent infestations.

Rats

Rats top the list of problematic rodents due to their adaptability and destructive nature. These pests are known for chewing through walls, wires, and even plumbing, causing costly damage.

Beyond property destruction, they are vectors for diseases such as leptospirosis, salmonella, and hantavirus. Rats also breed quickly, meaning a minor issue can escalate into a major infestation within weeks.

Their urine and droppings contaminate food and surfaces, creating unsanitary conditions. If left unchecked, a rat infestation can threaten not just your home but your family’s health. If you see rats in your home, call professional rodent control services as soon as possible.

Gophers

Gophers are notorious for their tunneling, which can destroy gardens, lawns, and underground utility lines. Their presence is often marked by unsightly mounds of dirt that appear overnight.

They feed on roots, bulbs, and plants, making them a gardener’s worst nightmare. Gophers can also compromise soil stability, leading to potential collapse in landscapes or slopes.

This burrowing activity can cause damage to irrigation systems or even weaken structural foundations near their tunnels. While gophers may seem less threatening than rats, their impact on property can be just as severe.

Squirrels

Squirrels might appear cute at first glance, but they are highly problematic when they invade homes and properties.

They often seek shelter in attics where they gnaw on wood, electrical wires, and insulation. This can not only cause structural damage but also increase fire risks.

Outdoors, squirrels wreak havoc by digging up gardens and damaging trees as they search for food. They’re also carriers of fleas and ticks, which can spread diseases to pets and humans. Don’t underestimate how much damage a small group of squirrels can do over time.

Mice

Mice are one of the most common and persistent rodents found in homes. Their small stature allows them to squeeze through tiny openings, making it easy for them to invade unnoticed.

Like rats, mice are known to chew on wires, drywall, and furniture, posing serious risks to home safety. They also contaminate food and surfaces, spreading diseases like hantavirus and salmonella.

Mice multiply quickly, turning a small problem into a full-blown infestation before you realize it. Their constant gnawing and scurrying can disrupt not only your property but also your peace of mind.

Understanding the most problematic types of rodent infestations can help you stop an infestation before the damage and health risks become too great. Taking swift and proactive action is crucial to prevent further damage and protect your property.

Don’t wait until the problem gets out of hand—protect your home by addressing infestations at the first sign.
