Pests are an ongoing problem for homeowners everywhere. From ants to cockroaches, house pests come in all shapes and sizes and can cause a variety of problems from property damage to health risks. Knowing the facts about common household pests is important in order to effectively address any infestations and protect your home. Here are 6 facts you should know about common house pests:

1. Cockroaches are another common pest that can easily infiltrate a home

Cockroaches prefer damp, dark places and reproduce quickly, so they can multiply exponentially if not taken care of properly. They also carry a variety of diseases and contaminants which can be especially dangerous for children and those with compromised immune systems. Even more so, for cockroaches to bite humans, they need to be extremely hungry. This means that the infestation could be further along than first thought, so it’s important to address it quickly before damage is done. Professional pest control is usually necessary to address a cockroach infestation.  Some of the most effective treatments include baiting, insect growth regulators, and residual sprays.

There are also DIY treatments available, but they may not be as effective. The way you decide to handle cockroaches should depend on your individual pest situation.

2. Ants are one of the most common and persistent household pests

They typically enter homes in search of food or water, leaving behind unsightly trails as they go. If left untreated, ant infestations can quickly get out of control, so it’s important to take action at the first sign of trouble. The best way to prevent ant infestations is to keep food and water sources sealed and stored properly. There are a variety of products, such as ant bait stations, that can help control a minor infestation.

For stronger infestations, fly traps and insecticides are your best bet. However, if the problem persists then you might need to enlist the help of a professional pest control company for more effective results.

3. Rodents such as mice and rats can be very destructive in the home

Rodents are equipped with razor-sharp incisors, enabling them to easily gnaw through almost any material; if neglected, they can be responsible for an array of destruction. They also carry a variety of diseases and parasites that can be dangerous to humans. If you want to be safe from pesky rodents, it’s essential to seal all possible entry points and keep your home as clean and orderly as possible. If the infestation has already taken hold of your abode, then don’t hesitate – to contact a pest control expert right away. To make sure this never happens again, ensure that good standards of hygiene are maintained in addition to blocking off likely entry routes for these bothersome critters.

4. Spiders can be beneficial in some cases but can also pose a threat

With open windows and doors, spiders can easily enter homes; some are harmless; however, black widows and brown recluses pose a threat. Be sure to exercise caution when dealing with these creatures, wearing protective gear if necessary. It is especially important to check areas of the home that are dark and damp, as spiders thrive in these conditions. If you find an infestation, try to remove them manually with a vacuum or contact a professional pest control company for assistance.

5. Flies are another common problem in homes

Flies spread a variety of pathogens and can cause food poisoning if they come into contact with food or surfaces in the kitchen. If you’re looking to eliminate flies from your space, it’s essential to start with basics like ensuring windows and doors are closed and storing food items in the fridge or containers for proper disposal of waste. There are a number of fly traps available on the market that could help control infestations; however, if the problem persists or is severe enough, professional pest control may be required.

6. Bed bugs can be especially difficult to get rid of once they have entered a home

They spread quickly from room to room through furniture, clothing, and other items and require professional pest control to completely eliminate them. In order to prevent an infestation, it’s important to inspect secondhand furniture and clothing before bringing them into your home. If you think you may have a bed bug infestation, contact a professional immediately for help. It can be difficult to get rid of bed bugs, they are resilient and reproduce quickly, so it’s best to take action right away.

Knowing the facts about common household pests is essential in order to protect your family, property, and wallet from damage and destruction. Regular inspections and preventive measures are the best way to ensure that your home remains free from pests. If infestations do occur, it’s important to contact a professional in order to effectively address the problem and keep your family safe.
