Let’s Find Out How to Pick a Shin Guard for Your MMA Classes

Traditional martial art forms include karate, kung fu, taekwondo, etc. There are modern versions also, such as Krav Maga, Muay Thai, and Boxing.

Did you hear about MMA or mixed martial arts? Even this is an evolved martial art form. MMA sees participants from all categories – kids, teens, and adults. Although it is primarily a combat sport, some people rely on it for self-defense. In cage fighting, MMA can be a common ingredient. It involves a wide range of striking and grappling tricks. One has to train well on the ground and stand-up fighting techniques to master this.

When someone goes to a gym for MMA classes, they frequently ask what they need to bring. MMA beginners need gloves, shin pads, groin cups, hand wraps, etc. While each piece of gear is unique and needs proper investigation before becoming a part of your training routine, you may start your search with shin guards. Beginners need these most to safeguard their shins and legs from injuries. How to decide on a choice? Here are some parameters.

MMA shin guard style

You get two predominant varieties, such as sock- and adjustable strap-based. Sock-style shin guards typically contain thin foam padding put together in place with stretchy cotton material. It can be neoprene socks. Although familiar with Muay Thai trainers, MMA fighters prefer this style more. The light fabric allows them to move around and grapple better. If there are going to be fewer kicks involved, you can rely on sock-based shin guards tension-free. However, you may have to leave this one for competitions and opt for adjustable strap-style shin protectors. These let the semi-rigid padding material sit on your shin and foot comfortably. The fastening points can be at the back of your calf at the top and lower levels. Many MMA players wear this for injury protection.

MMA shin guard features

The first thing to cross your mind when you think about the right features of this protective equipment is the material. Leather exteriors are the best for their long-lastingness. But it will be expensive. You also get synthetic leathers, which offer a similar experience at an affordable price. It can also last if you use your pair of shin guards well. Other options include cotton, vinyl, and neoprene. While these don’t compare to synthetic and pure leather varieties, you may invest in them to protect your shin until you can buy the higher version. However, ensure the shin guard fits you well without pinching your skin. But it doesn’t mean you should consider something other than a snug fit. A well-fitting piece of equipment will provide all the comfort without causing slipping risks.

Another thing you expect from this tool is its ability to free your movement. You should be able to bend and move your ankles smoothly, even with guards. The guard should remain under the knee. Else, it will poke outside when you turn your knees.

Most sparring activities require shin guards for optimum protection from the impacts. Still, focus on building your shins’ strength and endurance. With proper shin conditioning, you may go far in your sparring aspirations.
