The coronavirus pandemic of 2020 and the government-imposed hard lockdown have shown us that working or studying remotely is mostly possible. Moreover, many of us did not return to our offices, and despite the return to normal life, this part of the reality of the pandemic has stayed with us for a long time.

Workation in an RV

Workation is a new word, created by combining two English terms: work and vacation. It involves doing one’s work remotely while on a vacation trip. Is it possible to arrange space in an RV so that you can travel with it and work at the same time? Of course! Below we suggest how to do it!

We also recommend reading the interesting article vanspace 3D free alternative.

Organize the space in your RV

To work efficiently, keep the space around you organized. To organize a comfortable mobile office, we will need a little space! So get rid of all the items you don’t need and only take up valuable space. Remember to do such mundane things as folding your bed every day, which will not only make you gain more free space but will also influence you to keep your RV in order.

Workspace in an RV!

Table/desk

A place where you can sit comfortably is a must. It’s best if you arrange such a stand that can comfortably accommodate your laptop, and mouse and leave some space for a cup of coffee or a plate of snacks. If you need additional illumination for your keyboard, also invest in a lamp – if you don’t have enough space, one that clips directly to the laptop screen will also work.

The table you choose should be the right height – it can’t be too low, as constantly leaning into it won’t do your spine any good, and it shouldn’t be too high, as keeping your elbows up all the time can be severely uncomfortable.

Lack of space? No problem! Look for folding tops that mount directly to the wall – there are now stick-on versions on the market, which are easy, quick, and don’t require too much interference with the camper’s walls.

Laptop

A portable laptop is a much more convenient option than a heavy, space-consuming desktop computer. The equipment you choose should have a screen large enough so that you don’t tire your eyes and have to strain them to read anything. Also important is a comfortable keyboard with flat keys that work with just gentle pressure and don’t need to “bang” into them. A strong battery is also important, as you’ll definitely want to work outside while traveling!

Armchair

A comfortable chair is a must, and even if you have to give up something to get one, believe it’s worth it! When working remotely in one position for several hours, the spine and back get tired quickly. In the long run, uncomfortable and incorrect body positioning can lead to health problems such as curvature of the spine or painful muscle tension. So what should be the right chair? First of all, it must have the right height – you should be able to reach the laptop keyboard freely, without lifting your elbows, and your head should be at such a height that you can see your laptop screen well without leaning or stretching it up. It’s best to buy a chair with casters, as it allows you to quickly and easily change your position relative to your desk. The casters should be on 5 arms, as those on 4 are often unstable and therefore dangerous. Also, pay special attention to the headrest – it should be movable, as should the backrest, which should be tilted by about 10-15 degrees relative to the seat. Armrests also play an important role, especially if you do a lot of typing – ideally, they should be adjustable in height.

Fabric seats such as plastic or leather are easy to clean but unpleasant in hot weather (they heat up a lot and stick to the skin), fabric seats are definitely more comfortable, but harder to clean.

Printer/other equipment

If you need a printer to print a few pages from time to time, choose one up to A4 size with its own battery. Scanners are increasingly being supplanted by cell phones, so if you have a good camera on your smartphone, just download the appropriate app for taking scans.

Headphones with microphone

If you’ll have to talk to customers on the phone or take part in teleconferences at work, you’d better get good headphones with a microphone. They will allow you to work comfortably when you travel with your family or happen to be in a noisy or crowded place.

Coffee

Most of us start the day with an invigorating cup of coffee, if you count yourself among this group, we recommend buying a coffee machine, which will not take up much space and is used quickly and efficiently. It’s best to buy ground coffee, but if you prefer to do it yourself, a small hand grinder is the best option.

Surrounding

Think about what else you need to feel your best and work more efficiently! If you need to carry a notepad and highlighters, consider a place for them when choosing a table. Many people are positively influenced by plants and fresh flowers – organize your surroundings to feel your best!

Internet in an RV

Working remotely without access to good, high-speed Internet is unlikely to be possible.

If you have mobile Internet with a lot of data, you can make your phone into a mobile router. You can also buy an additional small router and insert a card with the Internet there – this will be sufficient wherever coverage from your carrier reaches.

More and more campsites in Poland are equipped with WiFi, unfortunately, sometimes you have to pay for it. In besieged campsites with free WiFi, the Internet may not work because it is overloaded, so choose your destination meticulously and check beforehand where fiber is available or the number of users of one network will not be too overwhelming.

What about outside the country? The best thing to do then is to buy a local SIM card with Internet or use places equipped with WiFi.

All of the devices mentioned draw a lot of electricity, so it’s worth considering what you can do to save a little on energy.

Electricity in an RV

For comfortable operation, we recommend setting up a solar/battery system to provide a free supply of energy. Solar panels mounted on the roof can provide us with a supply of electricity so necessary for the operation of all equipment.

Be sure to check where the USB and 230V connections are located in the camper and how many there are, where the residential battery is located and whether it is possible to add another battery, and whether the voltage converter will be sufficient for your needs.

What are the advantages of a mobile office in an RV?

First of all, you can constantly travel without losing your vacation and discover new places all the time! After work, you can immediately go on a trip and explore new areas. Every day you have the opportunity to work from a different place, which is conducive to stimulating creativity and thus, causes a surge of fresh ideas! Boring office work with lots of people who make noise and distract you, and coming home after work and the constant monotony is the bane of many of us’ daily lives, so workation in an RV can be completely life-changing! All it takes is a little willingness and self-denial and anything becomes possible. Work, grow and explore the world by creating a mobile office!
