Backyards are the perfect place for children to enjoy themselves, but they need to be comfortable. Your kids deserve a backyard that is cozy, shady, with plenty of room to run around and lots of outdoor furniture for them to sit on.

If you want your child’s backyard to be more than just a playground with grass – make it their own retreat!

Sun Protection

The first thing you need to do is make sure that your backyard has enough shade. Make sure that there are a lot of trees, and if not, hang a few umbrellas over the patio furniture. The shade will protect them from UV rays and sunburns.

If you have an above-ground pool, it should be protected with a pool cover or pool enclosure, and the pool should be shaded with cottonwood or palm trees.

If you’re in North Carolina, you can check out some of the options for awnings in Charlotte NC that are perfect for providing shade in the backyard. These awnings work by retracting and moving depending on the angle of the sun, and they come in a variety of colors that will match your outdoor furniture.

When you’re trying to decide where to place your shade structures over your patio or pool, remember that you need to be able to access them so you can move them when necessary. Sun protection is very important when it comes to children because they typically aren’t aware of how serious an issue it can be.

Water Fun

Kids also love to play in the water – and pools are a great addition to any backyard to keep them cool on hot days and provide hours of fun. However, if you don’t have an above-ground pool, no worries!

You can still add outdoor showers for them to rinse off after playing outside in the dirt or mud. The kids will love it too! Exercise is important for their growth and development but make sure they stay safe when they’re running around your backyard.

Add some rubberized mats, trampolines, swingset, monkey bars… anything that gives your adult peace of mind while the children are playing hard! If you do have space for a pool, however, you can also add a pool slide and water toys like water cannons or rubber ducks to make your backyard even more fun. There are also some great inflatable bounce houses to give the kids hours of play.

Make sure to secure the pool by adding locks to the ladders and making sure there are no gaps between your fence and pool.

Furniture

Kids love to relax as much as adults do, and they need comfortable seating in their backyard too! Get them some comfy outdoor furniture that’s sturdy and durable, such as wicker chairs with comfy cushions that will keep them cool.

Outdoor furniture is an important part of any backyard. If you want your child’s backyard to be more than just a playground with grass, then utilize furniture!

Make sure they have plenty of chairs, benches, and places to sit around the patio table. They should ideally be able to stay outside for hours at a time without feeling uncomfortable or cramped up.

Being out in nature provides us with something that we can’t get by sitting inside all day – fresh air! So make sure that your kid’s backyard has enough ventilation too!

Fresh air is extremely important, so install some wind chimes hanging from trees near windows so that when you open them on sunny days the breeze blows through the house refreshingly cool.

A Play Area

Every backyard needs a little play area for the kids to run around and burn off all of their energy. Add some fun playground equipment that anyone can enjoy – even the adults!

If you have younger children, make sure that there is also something soft they can land on when they fall, like rubberized mats or artificial grass. If you have a backyard then chances are good that it has at least some sand in the ground.

Use this to your advantage and build your kids a sandbox complete with molds. Not only will they love playing around in there for hours on end (and you won’t hear them complaining), but they’ll also learn the value of teamwork when they play with their friends. A sandbox is like an outdoor toy box!

A Treehouse

Treehouses are generally built for older children (or adults who want to relive their past) but can also be great fun for younger ones who would love to climb up into the branches and pretend that they’re in Neverland! This is probably most suitable for bigger backyards where enough space will be left around the tree for a ladder and also to walk around on.

If you can’t build your own, or if it’s too old-fashioned then there are plenty of other ways that children can play in the trees – from swings to monkey bars!

Safety First

The safety of your child comes first above everything else. Make sure that you put up fencing or railings around any pool areas to make sure no one falls in.

You should also regularly check outdoor furniture for sharp edges or rust spots, as well as regularly check playground equipment for loose bolts, nails, splinters… anything really. Your child’s safety is your number one priority!

You can also increase safety by regularly checking for poisonous plants and insects, as well as the presence of a first-aid kit should anyone get hurt.

Now that your backyard is equipped to be a safe space for children to have fun in, it’s time to sit back and enjoy spending quality time with them! Your kids deserve a backyard that is cozy, and shady, with plenty of room to run around and lots of outdoor furniture for them to sit on.

Make sure they have enough ventilation so they don’t feel stuffy after being outdoors. Fresh air is extremely important!

Water fun will give them hours of enjoyment. You don’t have to spend a small fortune on making your backyard comfortable.

Just taking a few steps towards decorating your backyard for children will make it more enjoyable! Remember, their backyard is their own retreat – so let them have fun in it!
