How To Choose an Ottoman for Your Living Room

The living room, no matter its size, is the perfect place to gather for special time with your family. You can host gatherings for extended families, plan a game night for immediate family members, or just relax together at the end of a long day.

How To Choose an Ottoman for Your Living Room

Your kids will probably drag their toys and books into your living room as well. That’s OK; this is a communal space.

Part of making that communal space cozy and comfortable is choosing the right furniture, such as an ottoman. You should add an ottoman for your living room if you need a versatile surface or extra storage. Keep reading to learn how to choose the right one.

Size of Your Space

The size of that ottoman depends on the size of your space and your sofa. Your space should allow for roughly one to one-and-a-half feet of space between the edge of your sofa and the edge of your ottoman.

Choose an ottoman that’s roughly the same height as your sofa cushions and at least half the size of your sofa. If you prefer a bigger ottoman, you can choose one as large as two-thirds the size of your sofa.

Shape of Your Furniture

Ottomans come in four shapes: square, rectangle, oval, and circle. The shape of your ottoman will depend on the shape of the furniture around it and how you want it to function with that furniture.

If you have a square sofa and you want to pull your ottoman up to the edge of the sofa to prop your feet up for movie night, then you should choose a square or rectangular ottoman.

If you have a curved sofa and there’s a large round rug in your living room, you may want an oval or circle ottoman to match the shapes. Pick whatever shape is best for your furniture. Don’t forget to match it to the style of that furniture, too.

Desired Function

Ottomans are extremely versatile. They can act as tables, footstools, extra seating, and even storage. Evaluate why you want an ottoman and what you want to get out of it.

Are you only interested in the additional storage? Then only shop for an ottoman that opens to reveal extra storage.

Do you want to create a cozy living room space with extra seating options? Then shop for an ottoman that’s comfortable to sit on.

Your living room is the gathering spot for casual and formal occasions. Choosing an ottoman for that space adds versatility and comfort that will make you want to use it even more.
