Finding gluten-free snacks at the supermarket used to involve finding healthy snacks. As more and more people are enjoying a gluten-free lifestyle, the aisles have become packed with snacks that are full of sugar and additives.
Prices have risen dramatically. It can be both cheaper and healthier to make little ones gluten-free snacks at home.
These are some of the best gluten-free snacks that your kids will actually eat!
Popcorn
Popcorn is a great go-to snack. It’s the perfect snack if you’re in a rush and don’t have time to make a homemade cake, and kids love popcorn! Simply toss a bag in the microwave and put on a movie to keep the little ones both fed and entertained.
While most popcorn is gluten-free, it’s always important to check the labels. Once you start looking at flavored popcorn, you’ll notice that there are more additives, which means that flavored popcorn is more likely to have gluten in it.
Fruit
Raw fruit is naturally gluten-free. Keeping fruits, such as grapes, mandarin oranges, and pre-sliced strawberries on hand that little ones can simply grab out of the fridge instantly makes snack time a breeze.
Some kids are bound to get tired of eating plain strawberries though. Mix things up with different combinations, such as pineapple and cottage cheese, to keep them interested in eating a healthy diet.
Vegetables
Raw vegetables are also naturally gluten-free. Vegetables don’t have the same high sugar content as fruits do, and they are packed with vitamins and nutrients. Raw broccoli, carrots, and cherry tomatoes with ranch can easily become your little ones’ favorite snacks. These are a great snack for kids that need a school snack too!
Fruit Salad
Fruit salad is easy to make and only requires a few ingredients. You’ll need:
- 1 16-ounce tub of whipped cream
- 2 cans of fruit cocktail
- 1 can of mandarin oranges
- 2 cups marshmallows
Drain the canned fruit in a strainer until there is no more liquid. Then, mix all of the ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Next, simply refrigerate for one hour. This is going to be one of your kid’s favorite snacks! You can also use colored marshmallows or sprinkle coconut on top. Adding other fruits is a great idea, but bananas do not last as long in the fridge, so make sure that you eat it the same day if you use bananas.
DIY Trail Mix
DIY trail mix is another easy snack, and it’s perfect for moms on the go. Simply mix together your favorite nuts and dried fruits with sugar-free chocolate chips. Then, sit the Tupperware container on the counter for hungry kids. Some great additions to the DIY trail mix are:
- Raisins
- Marshmallows
- Almonds
- Pecans
- Peanuts
- Craisins
- Dried apricots
The sweet and salty combination is perfect for kids! The dry ingredients make this a great snack to take with you on the go.
Gluten Free Cake
Quick and easy gluten-free snacks have their place, but sometimes you want home-baked goods for a gluten free snack, like gluten-free cake. You can also use your favorite homemade cake recipe with gluten-free flour or check out recipes online to find quick and easy cake recipes!
Gluten-Free Cookies
Gluten-free cookies are another great idea. Break out your favorite gluten-free flour that has a 1-to-1 ratio and use any cookie recipe to create gluten-free cookies.
If you’re in a rush, pick up some gluten-free Oreos. These aren’t as healthy as home-baked cookies, but they taste delicious, are easy to add to school lunches and are safe for kids with a food allergy to gluten.
Rice Cakes
Rice cakes are naturally gluten-free. They are low-calorie, too! However, plain rice cakes taste really bland. Kids that aren’t used to them might not like them.
Flavored rice cakes, such as rice cakes flavored with sweet potatoes, are available, but these usually contain more additives and sugar than plain rice cakes.
For a healthy alternative, spread rice cakes with your favorite nut butter, like almond butter, for a delicious snack.
Chips
Potato chips are naturally gluten-free, but it’s important to check the label to make sure that there are no gluten-containing additives.
For a more nutritious snack, consider making your own chips with fruits or vegetables! Slice apples, bananas, or sweet potatoes and use your air fryer to create this delicious snack.
Ants On A Log
Ants on a log are one of the best snack ideas if you have kids that love helping in the kitchen. Simply slice the celery into snack-sized pieces and spread peanut butter down the middle. Then, place raisins in the peanut butter for ants!
Apple Faces
Kids will also love decorating their apple slices to make little faces. Slice the apples, and spread a thin layer of peanut butter on one side. Then, use cinnamon to create smiley faces on the apples. After that, simply enjoy!
