Healthier Alternatives for Your Grocery List

Have you ever stood in the aisles of your grocery store, overwhelmed by all the choices in front of you? Even if your shopping list is short, the different brands, varieties, and ingredients in each item can make every decision unnecessarily complicated—especially if you’re looking for the healthiest options available.

If you’re seeking healthier alternatives for your grocery list, simplify your trip by keeping an eye out for these key items.

Low-Fat Dairy Options

Think critically about your options in the dairy aisle. Opt for low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese, yogurt, and other products. You can also pick up dairy-free alternatives such as soy milk or coconut milk, though you should make sure to grab an unsweetened variety.

Whole Grain and Whole Wheat

Stay away from white breads, and instead choose whole grain, multigrain, or whole wheat varieties. This goes beyond your loaf of bread as well: look for whole grain crackers, cereals, pasta, tortillas, and more. These options contain more fiber and fewer minerals than their refined grain alternatives.

Raw, Local Honey

Honey is the perfect natural sweetener for your tea, cereal, or toast, but there’s a difference between raw honey and regular honey. Make sure you grab a jar of raw honey if you can, as this version has no added sugar and retains all its natural health benefits, such as antioxidants and antibacterial agents.

Chicken or Turkey

Try to cut down on the amount of red meat you buy, as it’s often higher in fat than other options on the shelf. Instead of ground beef, look for ground turkey or chicken breast. If you do purchase red meat, leaner, grass-fed varieties make healthier alternatives for your grocery list.

Tea, Juice, and Sparkling Water

Does your family have a fondness for sweet drinks such as soda or fruit juices with added sugar? Cut down on these less healthy options by looking for tasty alternatives that don’t come with high-fructose corn syrup or other unnecessary additives. Instead, consider sparkling waters, unsweetened teas, or pure fruit juices.
