Driving Obstacles To Look Out for in a Parking Lot

Before you pull into a spot, you should always check your surroundings for driving obstacles in a parking lot that could damage your vehicle, from planters to stray shopping carts. Learn everything you need to know ahead.

Pedestrians

Whether it’s a distracted shopper or someone rushing to their car, pedestrians can appear out of nowhere. People can hide in your blind spots, especially children running underneath your cameras. Always slow down when entering a parking lot, especially near store entrances and pedestrian crossings. Yield to pedestrians when you see them.

Loose Shopping Carts

Shopping carts left in random spots can easily drift across the lot, especially on windy days. A collision with a shopping cart can cause scratches, dents, or broken windows on impact. Try to park far from cart returns or areas with unattended carts.

Tight Turns Around Light Posts

Many parking lots feature sharp corners with light posts or concrete barriers. Misjudging the tightness of a turn can lead to scrapes or chipped paint on your car. If you’re parking in a garage, take these narrow corners slowly.

Hidden Debris

Broken glass, nails, or other debris in a parking lot can puncture tires or lodge into your vehicle’s undercarriage. These small obstacles can be hard to look out for, especially if you’re driving in a parking lot at night. Check the ground before parking, avoiding areas littered with trash.

Other Cars Backing Out

Another obstacle to look for in a parking lot is vehicles reversing without checking their surroundings. These other drivers might cross your path unexpectedly. To avoid collisions, stay alert for brake lights or backup signals. Even a minor accident often requires bumper repair, so save yourself the money and time by driving slowly.

Uneven Surfaces and Potholes

Parking lots with uneven surfaces or potholes can damage your vehicle’s suspension, tires, or alignment, especially when driven over at high speeds. In unfamiliar or poorly maintained lots, check down the lanes for uneven surfaces before parking to avoid potential issues.
