Celebrate Your Birthday

by RAKI WRIGHT

Your birthday is the only day that is truly just yours. Not Mother’s Day, when all mothers are celebrated. Not Christmas, when everyone exchanges gifts.

We plan parties, make gift wishlists, and make cakes for our kids. But, what about us?

I have a very good friend who always takes the day off for her birthday (yes, even as a working mom) . She may go see a movie, go to the spa, even enjoy a nice lunch. But, she always takes the day off for herself. I have secretly been jealous of her planning and celebration of herself. If that inspires you, I recently posted a list of gift ideas for moms. You could treat yourself to any of those items.

My birthday falls on a Tuesday this year. (It’s tomorrow, if you were wondering 😉 ) Thankfully, it’s a day I normally don’t work. And, thankfully, both of my kids will be in school, for most of the day. So, I plan to indulge as much as I can.

Here are some freebies I plan to get:

A former boss would ask us each on our birthday: “what’s the best thing…?” and “what’s the worst thing…?” that has happened since your last birthday. Most years were unremarkable.

This year I would say that the worst thing was my surprising unemployment and all of the life changes that came with it. The best thing was recently getting a new part time job that allows me the flexibility to grow this blog, learn more about marketing/writing/and blogging, and the freedom to do so. I am happy to say I have come full circle.

Do you make a big “to do” of your birthday? How? Why not?

I think it’s important we take time for ourselves, and why not on our birthday? I’ve never gone all out for my own birthday though. I let hubs take care of the planning and meals. Sometimes it’s amazing and sometimes it’s as simple as buying me a cake instead of me making one.
I do have a friend though that goes all out and throws herself a party.

Thank you for sharing the links for the different birthday freebies. I love those! I told my husband that for my 30th birthday if he didn’t throw me one, I was going to do it myself! Thankfully, he did it. 🙂
