Arranging Insurance and Other Tips for Moving into a Student House in Canada

In a lot of countries, including Canada, the term “student house” refers to a rental property with several rooms and minimal furniture that is primarily used as a home by students during the school year.

The term is often used in contrast to the presence of four-year — “year-round” or “home” residences. The term “student house” can also refer to a one-bedroom apartment shared by two or more students.

Moving into a student’s house can be a stressful time. This is mainly because you will be spending most of your time living away from home.

This means you will have to bring all your belongings with you, as well as any furniture you may want to use. However, this time of year can be a breeze with a little preparation and the right tips.

The first of these being, to make sure that you buy affordable insurance in Canada.

  • When you are a student, it is important, and a peace of mind, that you purchase insurance for your possessions. You will want to cover everything that you take with you to your student accommodation. These will be items that your parents once insured on your behalf under their household contents policy. In particular, you will want to insure valuable equipment such as computers or laptops, your phone, headphones, and any other gadgets or accessories for listening to music. Your landlord will not insure your contents as part of renting your accommodation. This will be the same for your fellow students. So, it will be your responsibility to sort the insurance for them. It makes sense to give this priority, but at the same time, look for a competitive insurer that has your interests at heart when you are on a student budget.
  • When you’re moving into student housing, there’s a lot to do. From packing to looking after your possessions (and getting some help from the housemates) to getting everything in order, you’ll need to make sure you can start your student life without any problems. But what about your gas safety certificate?

These checks are designed to ensure that gas appliances are installed and maintained to the highest standards, and if they’re not, the gas company can shut off the supply until a fault is fixed. This makes it important to check your gas safety certificate before moving into a student house.

  • Now, before you get all worked up about whether your bedroom-size bathroom will be adequate for taking baths, or whether you’re going to be able to fit all your books in your room, or if you’ll be able to keep up with the laundry, consider the less practical aspects of university life.

If you are moving into a student house, then you will need to clean the house before you move in since there might still be some dirt left from the previous student who had it before you.

You can get rid of those excess supplies and clothes before you move, or you can keep them and clean them all up before you move in. You can also get rid of all those old things you don’t want anymore.

  • It’s important to keep the house clean and the furniture well stocked, but it’s even more important to make sure the rest of the house is just as healthy. Air the house out — you may be surprised by the amount of dust that accumulates in a house over time. If you have allergies and asthma, this could be a real problem.

If you have roommates and don’t want to be smelling your smelly roommates’ deodorant or cooking smells in your room every night, the best thing you can do is to air your house out.

  • Another important thing you need to do when moving into a student house is a safety check. Moving into a student house with a group of people can be exciting, but it can often lead to a lot of high energy. You can prepare for the unknown and ensure your safety by doing a safety check for a student’s house.

The safety of your accommodation is of key importance. After all, you’ve moved to a new place, and you want to be sure that you are safe and secure.

The process of doing a safety check for a student’s house is quite simple. Every student house had done this before they moved in.

Some basics of doing a safety check are checking all the locks are working okay, and the windows are closed securely and, if you have any concerns, you can also talk to the landlord.

  • Moving into a student house for the first time is a big decision and something that we all experience during our time in higher education. However, it is important to know what the rules are and how your living arrangements will be run when moving into a house. These are things that don’t tend to be mentioned when you are looking to move into a student house, but that is essential when deciding on whom you want as your housemates and how you will be living.

In conclusion, we just need to give student accommodation an extra thought so that we are fully prepared for living away from home as a student. We should not ignore purchasing insurance at a competitive rate when it comes to protecting our prized possessions against the risk of theft while living away from home in Canada.
